Fifth Floor Common Room, Monday Evening

"Can you hand me the ginger?" Ronan asked, as he ground some spices with a mortar and pestle. "The fresh, I mean." The fragrant smells of cooking curry were already pervading the common room, and probably making their way through the rest of the dorms. When Isabel handed over the asked-for ginger, he added some to the mixture in the mortar, and went back to grinding. "Thanks. I hope this isn't too spicy for whoever else comes along," he added.

Hoshi followed her nose upstairs to the fifth floor. "Something smells good! Is there anything I can do to help?"

"I think we've got it under control," Ronan said, smiling. "But you're welcome to have some when it's ready."

"Thanks," said Hoshi, making herself comfortable on the couch.

"Have you had much Indian food before?" Ronan asked, as he began chopping cucumber for a raita.

"Occasionally," said Hoshi. "We get it in Japan like everything else, but usually it's been tweaked to make it more palatable to the Japanese taste."

"How so?" Ronan asked. "Would that be less spicy? Or is it just a focus on substituting more traditional Japanese foods?"

"They'll find ways of substituting with Japanese ingredients, like serving curried tofu or fish," explained Hoshi.

"Huh," Ronan said. "Actually, I had a fish curry once. It was pretty good."

"I'm sure it's out there," said Hoshi. "But in Japan, it's more like the Thai curries than the ones you get in India. They probably have the same origins, though."

"Hi Hoshi," Isabel waved. "You can eat. There's going to be a ton."

"Good, because it all smells really good," said Hoshi.

"It's all Ronan's doing," Isabel told Hoshi. "I've never had Indian food before. He's fixing that."

"Oh, that's nice," said Hoshi. "It's always good to try new things."

"That's what I figured," she nodded. "He said it's spicy. I love spicy stuff so I'm sure I'll love it."

"I'm sure you will," said Hoshi. "Remind me to make mapo tofu one day. It's a Chinese dish that's really spicy, but it's very popular in Japan too."

"I'd like that," Isabel smiled. "I've had tofu but not like that."

"It's really good," said Hoshi. "Tofu has this reputation of being really bland but it picks up the flavors of whatever you cook it with."

"Hi Hoshi!" Charlie waved as she started searching around for a spoon. "How have you been? I haven't seen you for a while. How was your Parents' Weekend?"

"It was fairly quiet, since I spent the whole weekend hiding in my room," said Hoshi.

Charlie stifled a giggle, and said, "How successful were you? Did anyone find you? Or was it general hiding, not hiding from anyone specific?"

"I'm not great with large crowds," explained Hoshi. "I already knew that my parents weren't coming anyway. Miss Connell asked if I could work at the hotel on Friday, but when I got there and saw all those people in the lobby, I had a minor freak out and left."

Charlie winced for her and said, "Wow, does that not sound like fun for you. At least that only happens once or twice a year, though? My grandfather came in, you probably saw him before you bugged out."

"I got through Homecoming weekend just fine, but I knew it would be crowded and I was mentally prepared for it," said Hoshi. "Next year, I'll be prepared."

Charlie nodded thoughtfully, then swallowed another bite of curry. "Have you always hated crowds?" She paused. "And you don't have to answer that if it was rude."

"I've had this problem with claustrophobia since I was little," said Hoshi. "Small spaces and large crowds tend to set off my panic attacks."
