April Fools Party, Third Floor Common Room - Tuesday Night

The TV was hooked up to play only music videos and had a microphone set up with it, the pizza was fresh and tasty and there was plenty of soda for all.

A sign outside the common room read:

APRIL FOOLS PARTY!
Free food, drinks and karaoke. All welcome. Bring a friend!

Party sponsored by Ferris Bueller

[OOC: Going up a little early.]

He took that as meaning that he could walk over.

"Ino told me you might want some help with fixing your room?"

Annette laughed and managed to not look horrified at the mentioning of her room. "Only if you know magic, Liir. Aside from that, I'm afraid I'm going to have to toss rugs everywhere to cover messes and spills up."

He considered that.

"I know some magic," he admitted. "Well, I have magic. And I'm learning things, but I don't know that I'd be able to do something that specific.

"I am, however, very good at cleaning things. Plenty of experience. Would you like me to take a look and see if I can help?"

She twisted her lips up. "It's fingernail polish on my carpet," she said, keeping her voice low, a brow arched. "I have no idea how to get that stuff up. Do you?"

"I don't know," he admitted. "I don't know the stain. But I could give it a shot."

Annette giggled and scrunched up her shoulders. "It's... kind of a really hard, really bad stain. Like way bad, Liir. If you want to give it a try? I'll totally welcome it."

He smiled at her.

"You thought breakfast was hard, but it just takes a bit of thought. I'll give it a try a little later, then."

She titled her head, smiling. "This isn't cooking but I am so going to put my faith in you because omigod, Liir, you ought to see my floor!"

"I cooked and I cleaned before I came here," he said. And then, generally, he stared at the wall thoughtlessly or he slept.

"And I'd hate to leave you a messy floor."

"It was my fault, but maybe we can try together?"

Re: Arrivals and Mingling

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course," he said. "I had a good time with you the last time. As long as you don't mind."

Annette moved to give him a little nudge with her shoulder, smiling up at him. "I had a great time with you and we can make a fun little chore out of trying to clean my floor. I don't mind, not at all."

"All right."

He shifted to nudge her back.

"Generally, chores aren't so bad. I think most people don't like them because it kept them from doing other things they liked better."

Re: Arrivals and Mingling

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
"That is a good reason why not to do chores. You know, I grew up not having to do anything? I guess that is why I don't really know how to do anything now. We always had maids and still do."

Oddly enough, he didn't mind that. He would twitch at the mention of family, at parents, but a life of privilege wasn't anything he really cared about all that much.

"I had nothing much else to do." Especially when the soldiers weren't there or he wasn't permitted down to Red Windmill. "It filled the time."

"...and I had too much to do," she said a little sadly. "Dance lessons, piano lessons, language tutors... parties, recitals, entertaining -- it never ended..."

Re: Arrivals and Mingling

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
That strikes a slightly different chord, but he's good at pretending things don't bother him. Far too good.

And he knows Annette doesn't have the first idea of why something like that would upset him, same as the pancakes.

"Which languages, if you don't mind me asking? I'm just curious since I'm in the language club here. I think I'm the only one who doesn't actually know a second one to any real degree."

"French, Spanish, German, and a little Japenese," she shrugged. "My parents thought it important... learning." Which it is, she knew, it was just that having any fun at all when she was a kid meant inventing her own playtimes that were more often than not, spent alone and in her room.

"It sounds important enough," he said blithely. There were things he didn't know, after all. "Andrew speaks some of those, and Hoshi speaks Japanese at the club sometimes. I know bits and pieces of most of the languages in Oz, but nothing other than common Ozian for most things."

Re: Arrivals and Mingling

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
"I've never heard of your language, of course, but it sounds interesting. Japenese is hard to learn, at least for me it is... so I kind of gave up on it. I've spoken to Hoshi several times, I should try to speak to her in her tongue next time, undo my rusty self."

"It's just what I'm talking right now. It seems to be called English around here. Dorothy spoke it too, though she said it was spoken in Kansas. It's a funny old... well, set of worlds, it seems."

Re: Arrivals and Mingling

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh," well that was surprising. "So do we all seem to talk Ozian to you? And hey, small world, I'm from Kansas myself."

Re: Arrivals and Mingling

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-04-02 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

That was a twitch.

"Yes," he said, "everyone here, to me, speaks Ozian."

And if he sounded distracted, it was because he was savagely beating down at least three little voices in his head saying very unsavory things about Kansas.

She nodded then continued, unaware of his inner emotional struggle. "Of course, I don't live there anymore. My dad took a position as headmaster of Manchester prep in New York. I doubt I will ever see Kansas again, unless I just care to reminisce one day and re-visit it."

"There's no place like... Kansas," he said with a brief smile.

"That's what she always seemed to say."
