Right, showing Jaina how to cook. It couldn't be too hard, John reasoned. He was not a good cook by any stretch, but he was capable of boiling water and setting timers and following directions. The whole endeavor was more about showing her what cooking entailed in comparison to making a sandwich or microwaving popcorn rather than some sort of five course meal.

And he was prepared. He'd purchased ingredients, he'd gotten out pans. There would be spaghetti for dinner, and enough for everyone.

"Okay, so first, you know what a stove is, right?" John teased, rubbing his hands together. At least he hoped he was teasing.

She paused, taking the time to pour the pasta into the boiling water. "Maybe I do." No, she didn't.

"Oh, in that case I won't turn up the heat," he said, still stirring.

"You can if you'd rather it be warmer," Jaina said, "since we're both eating it."

"Nice of you to think of others," John smirked, turning up the heat. "Now, we just set a timer for your pasta and keep waiting."

"Okay," she said, looking around for a timer. "Anything we need to revisit on the previous possibly-interruptable conversation or should we move on to a new one?'

"Your turn this time, I think," John said, glad for the stirring task as it gave him something to focus on if she was going to get all deep.

"I'm not sure I have anything," she said after a long moment. "Maybe that was subconsciously why I asked you."

"You ran out of things to talk about?" John didn't quite believe that.

"Big stuff, anyway," she said. "Anything that needs an interruption." She wasn't getting into the obvious, if she was leaving in the morning again.

He was busy pretending not to remember she was leaving again. "Okay, so how about something little? No burning questions?"

"Where'd you learn to cook so well?" she asked.

"This is not cooking well," John said, shaking his head in amusement. "This is just cooking. And I learned from watching and trying to help others."

"So it's just a handy little skill you picked up?" she asked.

"It's not like I'm making a five course meal," he pointed out. "This is survival cooking right here."

"No, survival cooking is whatever you can catch and cook when you're stranded somewhere," she pointed out.

"Same thing. It's the level of simplicity."

"Without possible hunting," she smirked.

"I could hunt," John said, only pouting slightly that she thought he couldn't.

"I'm sure you could," she said. "But I'm pretty sure that's not a part of pasta-making."

"It could be an interesting addition to the pasta," John offered.

"Maybe another time," she said, patting his arm.

"Good, because this is almost ready and I don't feel like hunting Koala."

Omg so wrong. "Too much work anyway," she decided. "And if it's almost ready, I almost feel accomplished."

"Your world worries me sometimes. At least tell me your mom or dad is capable of cooking something," John said.

"If they had to," Jaina answered. "They were bigger on the galaxy-saving than the domesticated arts."
