Fourth Floor Common Room [evening]

Given how many of her conversations that afternoon had turned to food, Sookie had found herself kind of homesick in spite of herself, especially after facing the prospect of eating what she found in the common room.

So, she took it upon herself to run out and grab some fresh ingredients, and returned back to the common room to boil some rice and throw everything ~~moddable~~ that she'd bought and found that looked good into the pot to make some jambalaya.

She'd taken a little more care and put together a berry cobbler, admittedly using frozen berries. Her gran had always said it tasted the same anyway, so long as you used enough butter.

She kept the TV on while she cooked and familiarized herself with the kitchen, and tried to adjust to the technology and appliances that were ten years ahead of her time. It was fairly easy to figure out, even if some of the commercials threw her for a loop.

"Oh, okay," Jaina nodded. She'd learned enough about the geography here to have a decent idea of where that was. "I've been here a year and a half or so. What, I don't look like a grizzled veteran?"

"Well, yeah, but it just didn't seem polite to point that out," Sookie teased. "I'm Sookie, by the way, hi."

"Jaina," she introduced herself. "Not used to being away from home?" It was the only reason she could see for being homesick this fast, but she had very skewed ideas of that.

"Not at all," she agreed, shaking her head. "This is the first time out on my own. And this far away, at all."

"It gets easier," Jaina assured her. "The first weekend might be rough, but once you start to get a routine going..."

"That's my thought," Sookie said agreeably, nodding. "I mean, honestly, I can't get in here every meal and cook."

Probably.

"And the people here aren't so bad. A lot of them are probably in the same boat," she shrugged.

"True. Where're you from?" she asked. Maybe she was another interesting space person. Or from another dimension. Or something totally new.

"A planet called Coruscant, originally," Jaina said. "But I kind of grew up all over." It was much easier to say once your planet got Vongformed.

Another space person. Awesome. "Like all over as in different planets?"

What a weird question to ask.

And now that she was getting used to asking these questions, she also ventured out a little mentally to see if she could glean anything Jaina wasn't actually saying.

But it was like running into a mental wall, and she blinked. That had never really happened before, but it was...pleasant, for a telepath. It belatedly occurred to her that it was probably what someone would experience if they tried to read her mind.

Jaina was just enough used to people trying to poke around in her brain that she gave her a suspicious little glance. "Several different planets. Did you just..."

"Yeah, sorry," Sookie said apologetically, biting her lip. "Sorry. Are you one of those Jedi things? Because I keep doin' it to y'all and you guys can tell and that's never happened before. Sorry."

"Yeah, I am. You get used to people poking around in your head all the time," she said, not too bothered since she'd copped to it. And she was better at shutting people out than most. "You're Tahiri's little sister, right?"

She nodded. "And I met a guy named Zayne. He could tell, too. I've never met anyone who could tell, before today. And I can't, um, hear you. It's not like there's nothing there, it's just that I can tell you're stopping me. I don't like snooping around in people's heads, honestly."

"I don't like sharing lately," Jaina explained. "It's nothing personal, I keep everyone out. You might run into that with a few people here."

"Totally understandable," Sookie said, nodding. "I try to keep my own, um...stuff closed, so I don't hear everyone, but it's a strain. Um, could you maybe...not tell people I can do that? I'm starting to get the feeling it's not so unusual here, but people thought I was crazy at home."

"It's your thing," she said easily. "It's not mine to tell. Though it's really not uncommon. I think sometimes half the people here have powers of some kind of another."

"It's uncommon where I'm from," she explained. "At least, uncommon enough that no one else in Bon Temps can do it or has ever heard of anyone who can except me. And most people still don't believe I can."

"Depending on how deep you can go, I'd say that'd be pretty easy to prove. 'And when you were five...'" she reasoned.

"Generally I can't do that," she admitted. "Mostly I can just tell what people are thinking on the surface. But even then, people'd rather just think I'm crazy than face something they don't understand."

"I get it," Jaina said. "I don't get a lot of it personally, but... At least here you shouldn't have to keep it under wraps for any longer than you want to."

She had to smile at that prospect. "You think? I mean, I don't wanna get my hopes up."

"You should be able to tell who you want when you're comfortable telling them. I know we've had telepaths here before, and the Jedi aren't exactly quiet powers-wise," she said. "And if they don't like it, then that's their problem."

"And I really don't spend my time in other people's heads when I can help it," she added. "Seriously, there are so many people whose secrets I wish I didn't know. I have met at least three grown men in Bon Temps who like to put on their wives' underwear, for instance."

Jaina didn't know why she wanted to start giggling at that. But too bad, because she totally was.
