Fourth Floor Common Room [evening]

Given how many of her conversations that afternoon had turned to food, Sookie had found herself kind of homesick in spite of herself, especially after facing the prospect of eating what she found in the common room.

So, she took it upon herself to run out and grab some fresh ingredients, and returned back to the common room to boil some rice and throw everything moddable that she'd bought and found that looked good into the pot to make some jambalaya.

She'd taken a little more care and put together a berry cobbler, admittedly using frozen berries. Her gran had always said it tasted the same anyway, so long as you used enough butter.

She kept the TV on while she cooked and familiarized herself with the kitchen, and tried to adjust to the technology and appliances that were ten years ahead of her time. It was fairly easy to figure out, even if some of the commercials threw her for a loop.

Sure there'd been a picnic earlier, but John couldn't pass up a common room of home cooked food. "I love when new people cook!"

Oh, look, there was a girlfriend waving. A girlfriend who was actually making sort of an attempt to be social for longer than the picnic.

And look at the boyfriend staring and moving over to make sure she wasn't ill. "Hey. You're in a common room."

"I do that sometimes," she said casually. And it wasn't even on the third or fifth floor!

"Can I see your hip, please?" John asked with an evil smirk.

"Later," she replied. "I didn't want to go back to my room yet."

"No need now," John grinned. "Just making sure you were you."

"I do show up in common rooms now and then," Jaina protested. Which she did. Just not enough to be noticed.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't tease," John said, chastised. "You've met a lot of new people today. Anyone decide we're havin' a kid now?" He thought he was hilarious.

"I will hurt you," she threatened. "Okay, you find the prince and see what he says. And if you freak out about it, I will laugh really hard."

He shouldn't love it when she threatened him like that and laughed. "Maybe he's just really old fashioned. Were you two talking about sex or something?"

She stared at him. "Wait, what?"

"Old fashioned? Like the people who don't believe you can sleep with someone without marrying them first?" John tried to clarify his point.

"Well, good," she said, grinning. "I made way too much, so you can help me out with eating all this."

"Sounds fantastic," he replied happily. "I'm John by the way. Sheppard, but I think I'm still the only one around right now."

"I'm Sookie. Stackhouse, but I'm also pretty sure there aren't any other Sookies around," she said thoughtfully. "Considering how many people've said it's unusual."

"That's a real interesting name," John stretched it out, trying to say it like she had, "Suuucky."

"Where're you from? You're one of like two people to get it right on the first try today," she noted.

"All over," John waved a hand around. "My family's got a horse ranch down south and some of those accents rub off or something." He had no idea why he could, no."

She shrugged, smiling. "But yeah, I've never met anyone else with it. And I've heard allllll the 'Sucky' jokes."

John snorted. "Do they call you Sucky? That's not what I hear at all."

"I mean, I shouldn't laugh, I'm basically named after a toilet."

Sookie giggled. "That's kinda stretching it. Not that 'Sucky' is really the high point of humor, either."

"Names are tricky. I'd say we could go by Dick and Jane, but I think people would stare."

"I'd say Jane's plenty safe, but you're trading in for the more mockable model with Dick there," she commented.

"We've had a couple of Dick's in Fandom. At least one of them really lived up to the name, even," John remarked.
