Super Bowl Party, 1st Floor Rec Room, Sunday Afternoon

Thanks to KKG and a little ingenuity, the first floor rec room was arranged for a Super Bowl Party. Black, yellow, red and white crepe paper hung from the walls, a good chunk of the seating in the dorms had been dragged into the room for the crowd, and a table was full of assorted snacks guaranteed to destroy arteries and waistlines alike.

Even if you just wanted to see the commercials, it would probably be a fun time.

[OOC: I have NO time to make this creative, sorry. Up early for SP and timezones, please wait for OCD is done.]

"It depends on the situation, really. We're our own organization. The government can ask for our assistance, but we're allowed to say no, and we can operate independently of them if we need to," she said. "In fact, before we lost our capitol planet, the government was willing to turn us over to the enemy to try and placate them. The Chief of State we have in place now seems much more willing to work with us. And not screw us over again."

"Politics, it seems, have gotten more complicated where you live," he said, wryly. That was one way of putting it. "We've but one king. As his son, I command the knights. It's simple, and it's always functioned well."

"That sounds nice and uncomplicated. Though I don't know that I could handle it myself," said she who tended to go off to do something on her own rather than hear them tell her she couldn't. "And the knights don't give you any problem? They fall in line okay?"

"They were hand-picked," Arthur said, "I won't have anyone at my side who isn't striving to serve-- the people as well as myself. I hope. Things do get... complicated."

"Like how?" she wondered.

"Our fiat only holds within the kingdom," Arthur said, "We can't help those outside our borders."

"So even if war broke out just beyond the boundary lines, you couldn't cross it to help?" That would killher.

It killed him on a regular basis.

"Exactly," he said. "I'd like to see us stand as a beacon against injustice, but treaties as they are don't allow it."

"Is there anything you can do about that? Or at least look forward to doing when your time comes?" she asked.

"I wish I could," he muttered. He'd find a way some day.

Change the subject. "Would you say your knights look to merit, or something else?" It was a question that'd plagued him since Lancelot.

"Not merit," Jaina said immediately. "I mean, there are always some who will be looking for glory, and I doubt anyone hates being called a hero once or twice, but it truly is about upholding justice and keeping the peace. Especially when we're not exactly liked by all. That's when someone who was called a hero could easily be looked upon as a failure."

He listened carefully, even if it wasn't answering the question he'd tried to ask. There was something to learn here, and he'd pick it up as it went.

"As should be the case," Arthur answered, at last. "But your selection... of the knights. How...?"

"We're not exactly selected by an person. We have the Force, which is basically what binds the whole galaxy together, which gives some people certain powers," she said carefully. She remembered his reaction when she first talked to him, so she wasn't sure how he'd take that part. "If you have Force abilities, you're able to be trained as a Jedi. If you don't... it just wouldn't work."

"So there's connection," Arthur said, exhaling a breath of air. "A matter of inherent loyalty."

That may not have been the answer he'd hoped for.

[personal profile] solo_sword 2009-02-01 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Inherent potential," Jaina corrected. "Not loyalty. Not every Force-sensitive takes that path and even some of the ones who do end up down different ones." Like she almost had.

But there was still... a selection.

He closed his mouth, in as far as it had been open, and nodded. "As long as they have the ability," he said.

"Yes," she said, and asked, "What are you thinking?"

Re: Pre-Game Mingling

[personal profile] bitchprince 2009-02-01 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just wondering about merit," he said, bordering on the dismissive. "Don't worry about it."

She nodded, not wanting to push too much. "So how are your knights doing with you here?" And she had personal reasons for asking that one.

"I'm sure they're doing fine."

Which meant both I don't know and why in hell's name don't I know I should smack myself for being so stupid at the same time.

"With good leadership I'm sure they are," she nodded. "I have a squadron back home that I have to leave a lot in order to be here. It's not fun, being away."

"I hand-picked their commanders myself," he said, suddenly. "But I suppose it isn't."

Arthur knew it wasn't, but eating himself alive never helped anyone. Right.

"Two teams trying to run a ball past a goal line. There's a lot of running and falling down," Jaina said. "It sounds kind of dumb, but there's actually some good strategy involved. You might like it."
