Sunday Afternoon: Third Floor Common Room

Dor wasn't sure what the big deal was about the big football game. After all they had football back in Xanth but they were just balls of feet that rolled around the jungle making footpaths for the populace to use.

So he decided to skip the whole gathering and settle down in the common room and see what was on TV.

It was then that he stumbled across the Puppy Bowl and somehow became hypnotized by the images of puppies frolicking around and playing with each other.

[Because... well it's what I watch instead of the Super Bowl. Because it's Puppies. Yes, I am a dork.]

Adora was amazed by all the posters announcing parties for this day. Intent on visiting each, she paused at the common room on her way downstairs when she spotted her roommate. "What are you up to, Dor?"

Upon hearing Adora's voice he jumped a little. "Oh, nothing," he stammered nervously. "There's a show on puppy dogs and... I was watching."

He'd been like this since last week around her.

Funny that.

"Oh," Adora's forehead crinkled at his continued nervousness around her. She thought she could spend a few minutes trying to get him to stop being so strange around her before heading downstairs.

"They're very cute puppies." Admittedly it was a pathetic attempt.

"They are," Dor said trying to shift his attention back to the screen. "They don't have a care in the world do they? I like the little one in the corner chasing its own tail."

"They're so sweet," Adora replied, liking this sort of television program. "Look at the one that fell asleep with his ear in the water dish. He's all fuzzy and wet!"

"Do you see the two fighting over the chew toy?" Dor said relaxing a little. "They're going to have the guy in the striped shirt come in if they don't stop."

"Uh oh, what's the guy in the striped shirt do?" Adora wondered, worried for the pups.

"He calls out for someting called a penalty and then walks away," Dor replied. "Then they just go back to fighting each other."

"So, really, he has no purpose except to pause the adorable for a few moments," Adora decided happily.

"I think it has something to do with the football game going on today," Dor replied. "Though I don't see how."

"Really? I wouldn't have expected them to have anything in common," Adora said. "Perhaps it will make more sense once I see some of the game."

"I don't see what's so interesting about it," Dor replied. "We have footballs back home and all they are is balls of feet that roll around the jungle making footpaths."

Jeff had come back in to check on the talking television, but it seemed to be otherwise occupied.

"Puppies," he said, observant, "Nice."

"It ain't porn but hey... they're pretty darn cute!" The TV replied.

"Hey Jeff!" Dor said cheerfully. "Look! Puppies playing!"

Dor was a bit of a dork.

Jeff nodded sagely and plopped down on the couch. "They are fairly cute," he told the telly, "And probably a bit more appropriate with..."

He nodded at Dor.

"What do you mean?" Dor asked innocently.

"He means you're a dork," the TV replied.

"It's Dor. D-O-R. No 'K'," Dor spelled it out.

He had no idea why that kept happening.

"Definitely," Jeff said, "A dork. You can tell by the spelling. I hardly ever have to spell things aloud."

Mostly because people just wanted him to stop talking.

"No. Dor," he said shaking his head. "D-O-R. Kind of like a door you open when you enter a room."

"Dork," Jeff repeated, then looked back at the television. "I think we need to get him a dictionary," he said, "He seems to really need it." Back at Dor: "It's okay. Sometimes I forget the entire English language, that's far worse."

"I actually could use a dictionary," Dor replied. "I really don't spell that well at all."

"Don't worry," Jeff said, reaching over to pat him consolingly on the arm, "We'll deal with that."

"You're going to help me spell better?" Dor asked gratefully. "Many people have tried but usually they give up in frustration."

"First, we're going to get you a dictionary," Jeff promised, "Then, we'll get you some magazines for practice."

"Oh, thank God," Jill said. "The Puppy Bowl!"

"I just stumbled across it," Dor replied. "Though I'm not exactly sure about the bowl. There is a water bowl but that's the only one I've seen."
