Dorm Pool, Tuesday Evening - PARTY

The day had flown by, and before she knew it, Hinata and Amber, who’d cut out of rehearsal early (small sacrifices), were down in the pool area and setting up the decorations for Turtle’s (hopefully) surprise birthday party. Streamers and balloons in gold, green, and purple matched the tablecloths, disposable plates and utensils. Colour co-ordination was a go.

It took them awhile to get things all set up, but eventually it was accomplished, and a sign at the door to the pool proclaimed ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY TURTLE!!!’ in, of course, green and gold glitter.

"Wow, nineteen," she said, like he was really getting up there. "Did you have a party?" She hadn't seen him since he turned and fled from her that one day. She had chalked it up for extreme shyness and was glad for the fact that he seemed to be able to talk to her with no amount of reservation.

"No, not really," he said and shook his head. "Just kind of did a small thing with Kaylee. I don't do very well in huge crowds with all the attention on me."

Amber nodded, getting that some people just didn't do the whole crowd thing when they were the center of attention. "Well, how've you been? Classes and all going okay?"

"Yeah, those are good," he said. "I had Food Appreciation today. We talked about pizza. I kind of really like that class."

"I love that class!" she exclaimed. "I had pepperoni. So traditional, I know, but my favorite."

"I had extra cheese which is a little less daring than pepperoni but still really good," Ned said. "I kind of don't want that class to ever end."

"Can you imagine having that class every single day?" she asked, laughing. "I'd never have to cook for myself. I'd definitely take home doggie bags."

"It'd be either really good or really bad," Ned decided. "I might end up with a permanent stomachache."

She giggled. "That could be bad, yes. I could handle at least two days a week though. I'm one of those types that can eat whatever and however much and can't seem to gain a pound."

"I can do that too," Ned said. "The, uh, not gaining a pound no matter what I eat. I don't know where it goes. My mom used to say it made my brain bigger."

"I would say it had to have helped with the height thing too," she said, grinning.

"All the food I ate made me tall?" He hadn't thought of that before.

"Hey, you never know," she said, nodding with a little shrug of her shoulders. "Growing boys and all that..."

"I just thought it was an overeager growth spurt," he said and laughed.

"Yah, that too," she laughed, knowing she was just being silly.

"Well, I've stopped growing so that food's gotta be going somewhere secret now, I guess," he replied.

"A secret food place?" she asked, amused.

"Probably somewhere in the corners of my hips," he laughed. "Padding."

She laughed and looked down at his narrow hips. "Oh, yah, Ned, totally the hips."

"Just wait, it'll show in a few years," he said and tapped a hip. "Just wait."

"Uh-huh," she nodded, grinning. "Well, fat hips or no, you have to take advantage of the food here tonight! Tons of great stuff!"

"Don't worry," Ned said, glancing at the food table. "I'm planning on it. Free food is always fun."
