Main Campfire, Friday Evening

Once the sun went down, a rather spectacularly large bonfire was lit for the party. No, Merlin was not aware it was now celebrated on the first of May. Calenders change, after all.

There was even a crudely constructed maypole there in case anyone felt the need to dance around it. They did so at their own peril, of course. The mockery that may ensue would probably be great.

Which clearly meant that the host of said party would have to make sure it wasn't due to any unpleasant odor. So, there was a Merlin wandering on over to say a friendly, "Hullo!"

Esme nodded what was probably a hello, asking, "What's this all for, anyway?"

"Beltane." Then Merlin remembered that most people didn't actually know what that was. "It's... a sort of an excuse for a party this time of year back home."

"What kind of excuse?" she asked, interested. "I saw the maypole. Unless you don't call it that where you're from."

"You know... drinking and--" Merlin's ears went a bit red. "--other things. Just a bit of a party after winter is finally over."

"It's very easy to notice when your ears turn red," Esme pointed out. She was pretty sure she could figure out why they did.

Well, anyone could notice that. Merlin almost managed to stop himself from covering them. Almost.

"Yes, I know."

"No sense covering 'em. Only draws more attention," she pointed out. "It's just an observation."

"Yes, well--" Well what? "You needn't bring them up. I'm aware of their size."

He could only pray Emmett would stop doing radio so that nickname wouldn't stick.

"I wasn't commenting on the size. Ears are ears, there's nothing to be done about it. I was talking about the redness."

"Oh." Merlin's mouth formed an embarrassed 'o' and he looked down at his feet. "Sorry about that then."

Manners, Merlin. Manners.

"Let's start that one again... I'm Merlin, I think we have a class together."

"Esmerelda. And I suppose we do. Such as the classes are."

Not that Esme had anyreal basis for what classes were supposed to be like, but she realized the subjects taught here were not what people learned back home, so therefore...

"Yes. Of course." Good god, he was able to deal with Arthur and this girl was giving him trouble. "Are you enjoying yourself?"

"It's a fine event," she said, giving at least that much. "Though I will be gone before the wine kicks in for most of the people here. There are things I'm just best off not seeing."

"Dancing around the maypole and the like?" There was an innuendo in there and Merlin was sadly clueless about it.

"Exactly that. Some people have no decency."

Merlin supposed some people may take offense to dancing. If it was of a certain type.

"That's true," He said slowly. "But not everyone dances like that."

"Not everyone, no. I certainly don't." Because it was all about her, yes.

"I don't think anyone would try to make you..."

"And it would do them good not to try," she said with a lift of her chin.

One day she might learn to interact with people normally.

Okay, no, actually she never ever would. Still, maybe it happened in some other alternate reality. Somewhere. In some time.

"...right. I think we're safe on that matter," Merlin replied slowly. Where had this conversation gone? He opened his mouth to ask just that, but thought better of it.

But his mouth was already open, so, "Have you tried the s'mores?"

Francine's solution for social awkwardness had rubbed off on him.

"No." She had no idea what they were, so that was possibly a fib. "Do you have any?"

"You make them," Merlin explained. By roasting one of the marshmallows first."

"I see," she said.

And then paused, waiting for him to make one, apparently. She wasn't by any means against work, but witches didn't do anything as simple as making food for themselves when there was a perfectly good other person right there.

...she was just lucky he was of that kind of temperament where helping out new people was a must. At least Arthur wasn't around to see it.

Merlin sighed quietly and put the marshmallow on a stick to show her how it went. "These are possibly the best bit of this place. And the privvies, of course."
