Third Floor Common Room - Saturday Morning

Claire was still in an excellent mood after her conversation with Jon last night. She decided to pass on the trip into the city and instead headed for the common room to make breakfast in an effort to meet some new people.

Anyone making their way past the room would be welcome to enjoy some pancakes with blueberry topping, strawberry topping and/or whipped cream. Because, yes, Claire was kind of a dork and went the red, white and blue route.

There was an appropriate holiday movie on the television.

"That's my name. New" , she said, before laughing, "yeah, I'm new. I'm Kate, nice to meet you."

She helped herself to some pancakes with blueberry topping.

"Nice to meet you, Kate," Claire said. "Where are you from?"

"Overland Park", she replied, between munching on bits of pancake, "that's in Kansas. You?"

"I grew up in Texas," she said. "But my family is in California now."

"Wow, you guys are a bit all over the place." Clearly, Kate still had limited knowledge of the origins of Fandom's denizens.

"So how did you end up at this school?"

"My dad decided that I should go away to school," Claire said with a shrug. "I'm glad he did though. I like it here. How did you end up coming here?"

"I decided I should go away to school", Kate said, smirking. "Things were... kind of crazy for a while this spring. I wanted some space for myself. So I looked up some boarding schools and ended up choosing this one."

"Good for you," Claire said. "Though, admittedly, Fandom does have some crazy moments."

"Yeah, I've heard some stuff about this place..." Something in the tone of Kate's voice seemed to suggest she didn't really want to know any more.

Claire recognized that tone and offered a reassuring smile. "It gets easier to deal with, I promise."

"God I hope so", Kate sighed. "My 'big sister' is gonna be attempting to ease me into things later today."

"That's good," she said. "Who's your big sister?"

"Francine", Kate smiled, "she seems pretty fun. And super friendly."

Elle laughed. "I should totally answer that way next time someone asks me. Usually I'm introducing first so I lose the moment to be witty cute like that. It's a pleasure meeting you, Kate. What grade are you in?"

"I'm a junior, how about you?"

She finished off her pancakes and regretted not bringing the last of her muffins with her. She should've guessed there would be people in the common room. And muffin-worthy people especially.

"I'm a sophomore," Elle replied. "I'm looking forward to classes starting and having something to do. Clubs too. I hope there super fun extracurricular activities but I didn't receive a social calendar upon registration so I couldn't say for sure. Where are you from, Kate?"

Kate wasn't really sure how psyched she was for extracurricular activities, so she was glad for the change of topic. Even if it was one of the basic newbie things.

"Overland Park, Kansas", she replied.

"Ooh! Kansas. I've never been there but hope to travel to various places when I can. Is it true that Kansas is like tornadoe central? That's so scary." Elle's a chatterbox, even first thing in the morning.

Kate had noticed that, and was surprised to also notice that she didn't mind. Apparently, talking to people was fun. Who woulda thought?

"Yeah, we get them more than other areas. It's not that scary when you live in a place where it's frequent. It's mostly just something that happens", she shrugged. "I guess you're not from around Kansas?"

"Yeah and I'm sure you guys have super good warnings. I've watched the tornado chasers a time or two on Discovery. I wouldn't want their job omigod. The hail is awful." She smiled wide. "I'm from Bel Air, California, actually. I live across the street from Aaron Spelling."

"Bel Air, huh?" She raised an eyebrow. "What made you come to school here? Isn't there lots of good schools in California?"

"Sure there are! Super great ones too. I wanted the experience of going off and meeting exchange students and people from other places, so I can learn the awesome and unique fashion trends that shape our globe. I'm going to study Fashion Merchandising one day. Working in the fashion world is a dream of mine. What brought you here?"

"Boredom", she shrugged. It wasn't necessarily true. It was more like too much had been going on. "Also, things were kinda crazy recently. I wanted to get away from it. ...And I guess I wanted to see other places, too."

"I don't really have any specific dreams yet, so that didn't motivate me."

"I try super hard not to be bored and crazy can infect your everyday normal mentality. You probably did the right thing by coming here. I hope it shakes that boredom and you can have fun!"

"I hope so too." She smiled. Elle's perkiness seemed surprisingly infectious.

"Somehow I doubt I will have to worry about boredom here." The crazy, however...
