Third Floor Common Room - LUAU

Joan and Kate had worked all afternoon to transform the common room into a tropical paradise.

Inside the door, a small table held flower leis for all of the party-goers. There were garlands hanging around the room, tabletop torches on most of the flat surfaces, and paper lanterns adding festive mood lighting.

Hawaiian music played in the background if anyone felt the urge to hula.

"Hawaii is a group of islands in the Pacific, right? I know very little of them." He smiled at her.

"Yes," she nodded, smirk lingering on her lips. "I don't know much, either, really. But there are touristy things that float around in pop culture so that everyone here in the mainland states at least thinks they know Hawaii."

"Ah, I see," Leto replied. "Joan informed me I'm supposed to wear one of these." He nudged one of the leis around her neck.

"Joan is absolutely right about that, even though I've had to give into some people who begged to differ," she said, making a disapproving face at the idea of said people.

"You can have one of mine, if you want."

"Perhaps you need to be more insistent, although that might cause some guests to flee," Leto smirked. "I'd be happy to have one of yours."

"I can't do that, I'm supposed to be a good hostess," Kate smirked back. "I'm not supposed to drive people away." She disentangled one of her leis from the other and went to slide the chain of flowers over his head.

He lowered his head to make it easier. "Thank you. No, I imagine that would be unwise."

"There you go," she half-muttered when the lei was in place, and gave him a smile. "Besides, I've been doing so much better at this hostess thing than I would've guessed, so it would be especially dumb to screw it up now."

"You had doubts about your talents in that department?" Leto asked

"A little," she shrugged. "I didn't do much of this kind of thing back home. Not that I've been doing that much hostessing at this party, either, but still, I've been actually welcoming people and stuff like that."

"A new experience then." He smiled at Kate, nudging her arm.

"A new experience," Kate agreed, nudging back, and cocking an eyebrow. "Meeting your stepmother was one of those, too."

There was a certain tone to that statement.

"Oh? What did you think of her?" Leto looked amused.

"She seemed nice enough," she said, still giving him a look. "That's not what I meant."

"No?" He knew very well what she meant, but tried to look perfectly innocent.

The innocent expression might have helped him if he hadn't smirked at the time.

"No," Kate said. "And you know what I mean, you're not that clueless."

Of course, she was upping the disapproval in her voice way beyond the level of what she actually felt.

"I did let you tell the story," Leto pointed out. "But if I've offended you, just tell me how you want to be compensated."

The amusement in his voice probably gave him away too.

"I wouldn't be talking to you now if you hadn't." That was probably true.

She rolled her eyes. "I don't know, just try not to do it again?"

Ghani would probably have hit him if she was here.

"Playing dumb is really unattractive, Leto."

"And you think I should make an effort to be attractive?" he replied.

"I just don't think you should deliberately do things that make you less attractive," Kate said, smirking. "It's common sense."

"Any other things you find unattractive?" he asked teasingly. "Just so I know."

"Mustaches," she replied with the first thing that came to her mind, and grinned. "And bad clothes. Also, being overly smug."

"Hm," Leto said. "I guess some people might say I run the risk of failing at the last one. I don't know about your taste in clothes, but I have certainly no intention of growing a mustache."
