Third Floor Common Room, Late Sunday Morning

Kate had partaken in free common room breakfast on her first morning at Fandom High, so today she thought she’d return the favor.

Unfortunately pancakes were beyond her abilities and she didn’t want to call her brother for help, so she made a safe fruit salad instead. There was a big bowl of it on the kitchen counter, and it was meant for anyone who happened to make their way into the common room, new and old students alike.

She also had all her leftover chocolate coins in a smaller bowl on the table.

"Maybe I can convince someone else to do it for me... That would work, right?"

"Maybe, but I think you'll lose awesome points."

"Hmm... Hey, Kate... you want to earn some awesome points from me...?"

"Only if there's money involved."

"Um... I'll pay for the miraclefruit?" That was a good offer, right?

"I think they're pretty expensive, so I'd expect you to."

"Oh," Jaime's face fell. "Um... maybe another time or something." Jaime Reyes wasn't exactly rolling in dough.

Neither was Kate Gregson, but she had connections.

"I should ask my aunt if she's still in touch with that one guy she was seeing this spring, because that's how I got to taste it in the first place. I could ask her to date him again so we could get miraclefruit for free," Kate grinned.

"Connections, huh?" Jaime laughed. "Was he a nice guy, or would she be doing you a huge favor?"

"He was actually a nice guy. She'd be doing herself a huge favor."

"Well, then. A win-win situation, huh?"

"If I can convince Charmaine to stop being an idiot. We'll see."

"I take it that that's a lot harder than it should be, huh?"

[vanillajello]

"She's not exactly smart with men."

Not that Kate's track record was much better.

"That sucks. Do you have to clean up after her?"

[vanillajello]

"No, thank God, I just make comments from the peanut gallery and listen to her bitch at my mom."

Jaime laughed. "And you get some perverse amusement from it all?" Because he knew he would.

"Of course. Schadenfreude is the best thing there is, after all."

"She makes breakfast and enjoys the finer things in life," Jaime lifted his spoon in a sort of toast.

"He recognizes good things when sees them," she replied, spoon-toasting him back and grinning.

"I'm not totally hopeless," he declared helpfully.

"No, there's definitely hope for you, newbie."

Kate maybe took a little too much joy in not being one of the newest kids anymore.

"With you to show me the ropes and stuff..."

"You'll be king of the school in no time at all," Kate smirked. "Well, second in command, actually." A beat. "And I need to get into a position of power first."

"You have a plan for that?" Jaime asked with a smirk. "Is it an evil plan?"
