Outside the Dorms, Very Very Late Monday Evening/Too Early Tuesday Morning

It was raining.

It was not raining very hard, but it was definitely raining at the insane time the sirens went off across the school. The lawn outside was slowly but surely turning into a wet mess, and the grass was just high enough in some places that it might leave wet splotches on an unsuspecting passer-by's pants.

Clearly this was a great time for a fire drill.

It was clearly also a great time to test the new volume on the sirens, which blared even harder than they had ever done before. Hope you didn't have to take any tests in the morning, kids!

[[ has a firedrill! students, have at. ]]

Olive was not smart. She hadn't even thought to look out the window to see if it was raining, because...well, hi, she was from California, okay. She wasn't used to worrying about rain at all. Her tank top (http://www1.assets-gap.com/Asset_Archive/ONWeb/Assets/Product/536/536698/big/on536698-21vliv01.jpg) and shorts (http://www.crazyforbargains.com/blspmoflpash.html) were fine, sure, and her arms were mostly crossed around herself out of warmth and irritation than modesty, but still.

Olive liked to sleep. And this was horrible. Her hair, which had been sticking slightly on end on one side, began to progressively droop and stick to her head in the rain, too. Not her best look at all.

"Nobody told me there were fire drills," Jessica said, walking up. "Everything else? Whatever. Fire drills in the middle of the night are just unfair."

"Maybe it's a real fire," Olive pointed out. "It's not a very practical time to run a drill. I bet someone used a hot plate or something."

Yeah no, it was a drill. Olive was just in denial about how cruel the school authorities could be.

Jessica thought about that, but a real fire would have started her spider-sense. "Maybe somebody was smoking right under a smoke detector? Because if that happened, then we have a new way smoking is bad for your health."

"We could inform our local DARE officer of this discovery," Olive said sagely.

"Do we have a local DARE officer?" Jessica asked.

"It's a high school," Olive pointed out. "I mean, we at least have a guidance counselor."

"Well, if I find out that somebody caused this, I'm going to the guidance counselor, DARE officer, or first teacher with a cape I can find. Somebody will make the smoker pay," Jessica vowed.

"Maybe someone left their curling iron on, too," Olive said thoughtfully. "There's a billion ways teenagers could have started the fire. I mean, I didn't. I was asleep. Like a sane person."

"You weren't curling your hair in your sleep, were you?" Jessica checked.

[identity profile] dirtiest-skank.livejournal.com 2012-09-03 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I generally don't," Olive mused. "My hair does this naturally, anyway." 'This' at the moment meant sticking to her head due to the rain, but point stood. "But I'd happily blame one of the girls who's better at that stuff."

[identity profile] craftyladyparts.livejournal.com 2012-09-03 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not it," Jessica said. She hadn't bothered to learn, master, or fail at the art of using burning hot metal to make her hair do things. "So we have two profiles already. Man, we're going to feel silly if this really was just a drill."

[identity profile] dirtiest-skank.livejournal.com 2012-09-03 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I for one will feel vigilant," Olive decided. "And stupid, too, yes, but also vigilant."

"As long as you emphasize it like that, I think that wins out over stupid," Jessica affirmed.
