Outside the Dorms, Very Very Late Monday Evening/Too Early Tuesday Morning

It was raining.

It was not raining very hard, but it was definitely raining at the insane time the sirens went off across the school. The lawn outside was slowly but surely turning into a wet mess, and the grass was just high enough in some places that it might leave wet splotches on an unsuspecting passer-by's pants.

Clearly this was a great time for a fire drill.

It was clearly also a great time to test the new volume on the sirens, which blared even harder than they had ever done before. Hope you didn't have to take any tests in the morning, kids!

"When we're all thoroughly miserable," he answered. "I'm almost there, what about you?"

"Passed it ten minutes ago." Oh, our Alec. So charming when he was unhappy, wasn't he? Though really, he was toning the bitchiness down for Jace. With a sigh, he offered, "You want my sweatshirt? Your hair's all wet."

"You do realize that means you'll have to expose some skin for the world to see, right?" Jace asked. "Unless you've taken wearing sweaters to bed."

"I'll survive in a t-shirt for now," Alec said dryly. "Most likely."

"It's fine," he said, shaking his head. "I'm not cold or anything and it's not like I can get any wetter."

"...you realize that's just asking for a torrential downpour, right?" Alec checked, already unzipping his sweatshirt and offering it out to Jace. "Here. Next time I'll bring my stele so we can use runes to block the rain."

Jace knew nothing gave Alec more joy than being a mother hen, so he took the sweatshirt and put it on. "Thanks. The alarm was so annoying that I was more focused on getting out of there than getting something to wear."

Alec shook his head, dismissing it. "I wasn't thinking either," he said. "Or I would've made sure to have a weapon on me when we left the dorms during a potential crisis."

Alec, you couldn't really shoot at a fire, sweetie.

Jace lifted an eyebrow. "Why would you need a weapon for a fire drill?"

"Well, it might not have been just a fire," Alec objected. He was really tired, okay? "Or some... band of Vikings might have been setting it on fire, or something."

Vikings. Okay then.

"Any other school and I would think you were crazy." He wouldn't have been surpised if vikings had attacked before, but his heart wasn't really into discussing the ridiculous at the moment. "Natalie's pissed at me. Well. As pissed as she gets."

"Oh?" Alec, try to keep the happy-dancing to a minimum. "Why?"

"I'm guessing it's because I keep pointing out her relationship with her boyfriend is a waste of time," Jace said, making no apologies for that since he was right. "She says she'll talk to me when she is prepared to deal with me again."

Alec made a face. Shocking, probably. "That's ridiculous," he said, with his usual disdain for all things Natalie. "It's as if she's never met you. Or heard you speak."

Or she just didn't like being antagonized? Maybe that.

"Right?" Alec, why do you encourage him? "I don't get it. I've been calling her boyfriend worthless for months, why is tonight so different?"

"And you'd think she'd know better than to consult you if she wanted romantic encouragements," Alec added. "Unless she has a very flawed idea of where you stand on this sort of thing."

A fact he was almost painfully aware of, la la la.

"Well. She didn't really ask for my opinion on the matter." Because Natalie was sane. "I gave out the advice for free. Out of the goodness of my heart, of course."

"Even so," Alec decided, because applying reason to a discussion of Jace versus Natalie was just crazy talk. "She's capable of asking you to change the subject if it's that much of a concern for her."

Because Jace was so great at that.

"Exactly! I even offered to avoid mentioning it, but it didn't do any good." Probably because Natalie knew Jace was incapable of keeping his mouth shut.

"Well, I'm not about to go after her." Of course not! That would be ridiculous!

"I'm sure she'll be back to leech onto you in a few days," Alec sighed. He was kind of terrible. "And if not... I'm sure she and her long-distance boyfriend will be very happy together."

He didn't really think that. Just FYI.

Jace gave Alec a very amused side glance. "You're loving this, aren't you?"

Alec... was, yes, but instead he was just going to shoot Jace a look like he had some kind of moral high ground here. "I'm not loving her being childish," he said. Lies. "But if she was going to pitch a fit about this, I'm glad she went and did it already."
