Fifth Floor Common Room, ALL DAY (and Night) [Wednesday]

Having a single now was nice, since it meant Minako didn't have to try being tidy around another person, but it got really lonely really fast.

Hence the fact she'd taken over the common room, making a HUGE bowl of punch and setting out chips, boxes of pop, and (store-bought) cookies before digging around in the closet to find the mats to hook up DDR on the ~~meta for~~ XBox.

"Sweet!" she cheered, as she held up the guitar for a different game. "You can be later. Gotta warm up before rocking out!"

"Because I've been mingling so far," Johnny said. "Don't worry, I'll be over there when the time is right."

"Is that time when there are more cute girls on the pad than there are mingling?" Kathy asked, biting down on a grin.

"That might help, but it's not what I was specifically thinking of," Johnny said with a slight smirk. "Anyway, if cute girls were the deciding factor, I would have found some time to play during your run already."

Well, she'd gotten several comments into a conversation with Johnny before blushing. That was sorta like progress, right?

"Flirt," she accused. Later, she'd be informing water that it was wet and the Pope he was Catholic. "I think you just like making me blush."

"Not 'just,'" Johnny said, flashing a smirk. "But it is fun. And flirting is in my nature."

"You do it very well," Kathy admitted. "You should give out lessons or something. 'How to talk to someone attractive without flailing like an idiot.' I'd probably pay to take something like that."

Johnny managed to say things without making them sound like cheesy lines. Kathy still had no idea how he did that.

Good people skills and utter sincerity. And maybe disarmingly good looks. "You're doing pretty well right now. Tell you what, I'll let you use me as practice and then you'll be ready for anything."

"Not true," Kathy said, shaking her head. "You're like a million times nicer than most other hot guys are."

It was all the sincerity. A rare commodity in Los Angeles.

"You just have to get better at finding the nice ones," Johnny said. "Then they'll be a breeze."

There did seem to be a rather lot of them at school. Too bad she had to go and crush on an entirely unsuitable jerk.

Kathy, look at your life. Look at your choices. Look at your options.

"I don't suppose there's a club or something you all belong to? The Hot Guys Who Are Also Nice Club? Then I could just look over your membership roster or something."

"Sorry. Life's not that easy," Johnny said.

Kathy sighed. "Now I'm all disappointed." She batted her eyes at him. "I don't suppose you could start one?"

"I don't know if you've noticed the people who've come up to talk to me today, but I haven't exactly been meeting that many guys around here," Johnny said. "It's my curse. I don't end up with many guy friends. But if you can get someone else to start the club, I promise to join it."

"Minako and I have been involved in a pretty intense DDR-off," Kathy said apologetically. "I really haven't noticed who's been lining up to talk to you. But I can guess."

And then, because she was exactly the kind of person who worried about these sorts of things, offered, "I could go back to the pads if there are other people waiting to talk to you. Or if you'd just like to be alone for a few minutes before the next influx?"

"Just to point it out, of all the girls here, you're the only one I've been on a date with," Johnny said. Made out or hooked up with was a different story, of course, but that was beside the point. "That means that you're not a stop gap between people who might want to talk to me. It means you're somebody I'm interested in talking to. So don't worry about it. There's no need to go back until you're ready to, I promise."

"And trust me, if I wanted some alone time, I could find a way to get some alone time. I'm here to talk to people."

"Oh. I--oh." Kathy was blushing again. "Thanks. That's...that's really nice to hear."

She was still growing into the idea that she could take up space without being an imposition. Johnny was really helpful at hammering that point home.

"You really are a good person. I mean, not just hot or a superhero, but a genuinely good person. I hope people tell you that a lot."
