Fifth Floor Common Room, ALL DAY (and Night) [Wednesday]

Having a single now was nice, since it meant Minako didn't have to try being tidy around another person, but it got really lonely really fast.

Hence the fact she'd taken over the common room, making a HUGE bowl of punch and setting out chips, boxes of pop, and (store-bought) cookies before digging around in the closet to find the mats to hook up DDR on the ~~meta for~~ XBox.

"Sweet!" she cheered, as she held up the guitar for a different game. "You can be later. Gotta warm up before rocking out!"

"She text back yet?" Barry said trying to see what the message was still.

"She did," Kathy said, reading it and starting to type furiously back. "She seems intrigued."

Or suspicious.

Okay, it was probably suspicious. But that was kind of like being intrigued! If you squinted.

"Why do you care what kind of pants she wears?" she asked, just realizing that was weird. Like Barry had an opinion on women's fashion most of the time.

"I just want her to be comfortable!"

Lies.

And then he felt guilty. Which is rare for him but it does happen.

"Look. Don't pressure her okay? If she says no just let it go," he said earnestly.

"Goodness, Barry! I'm not going to twist her arm!" Kathy huffed. "If she doesn't want to come, I'm not gonna force the issue, okay?"

She typed a few more things, then held out her phone. "Here. This is what we said, okay?"

"It's not about proving me wrong!" Barry protested. "Shit. She was tense enough at her own birthday party. I just don't want to be that fucking guy because she came to the party in pants and had a horrible time, okay?"

"Okay, okay," Kathy said quickly, typing out another message. The last thing she wanted to do was drag Elsa into something that would make her miserable, especially when she was just messing with Barry in the first place. "Look, I just sent this. That should be enough to convince her that I won't hold it against her if she doesn't do any of that."

Not that she would! Ever.

He's very serious about the not pressuring you, though. While it would be great to have you here (in pants or not!), please don't feel like you have no choice. The last thing anyone wants is for you to have a bad time. Especially Barry.

Barry had pulled out his own phone and had sent a text himself. He looked over at Kathy's and let out a sigh of relief. "Okay. Thanks. Sorry. Jesus, I'm such a fucking asshole."

"Wait, what about this is making you into a--an asshole?" Kathy looked at Barry like he was nuts. "You're looking out for your girlfriend's emotional and mental well-being. That's pretty much the opposite of being a jerk."

Look, she'd stuttered over the curse once. It didn't need repeating.

"I shouldn't have even brought it up," Barry said and then saw Elsa return text. "Okay. Nevermind. It's all good. I just... I know how hard it can be isolating yourself from everyone. I don't want to force her."

"What, the DDR? I thought that was my idea," Kathy said, not entirely following. She was also typing out a long message to Elsa, so was only three-quarters listening. "Look, I think you're being a great boyfriend. And, more important than that, so does Elsa, I bet."

She showed him her phone again. "See? She understood exactly why you were worried."

"Yeah well I secretly wanted it to happen," Barry admitting it out loud.

The allure of pants. Damn it all.

"That doesn't even count, Barry." Kathy was tempted to swat him. "If you kept cajoling her in hopes that she'd show up in pants, you'd be an asshole. Secretly hoping it would happen, while making sure that she feels safe means that you're a really good guy. You're working against what you want for the sake of someone else's happiness. That's pretty solidly white-hat territory, you know."

"Still. Feel like a shithead," Barry said shaking his head. "I mean normally I'd be all okay with it and encourage it but... Shit. I don't know. I just-"

He took a deep breath and let it out.

"I haven't really liked or cared for anyone like this before."

He face-palmed.

"I'm such a wuss."

Well, it was probably hard to form a lasting relationship with someone when you kept nuking their memories, Barry.

For her own part, Kathy was doing her best to stay calm, not grinning or squeeing or anything that might spook him. "Are you falling in love, you think? And don't know how to tell her?"

Not smiling not smiling not smiling!

Barry groaned. "You are the so the wrong person to be telling this," he grumbled. "I just... have feelings okay? I like her a lot and I care about her. Let's leave it at that and don't fucking breathe a word of this to her."

"Hey!" Kathy protested, trying to sound indignant and not hurt. "How am I the wrong person to be telling! I'm a great confidant! I'm not gonna tell her or make fun of you for your feelings!"

Barry groaned and frowned some more. "Fuck. Sorry. Shit. I know I just... I don't know how to deal with this."

He let out a sigh.

"You're a good friend, Kathy. I give you a lot of shit sometimes but you're a good friend."

"You don't give me crap all the time," Kathy grumbled. "Just the times I see you."

She huffed a bit and then relented. "Falling for someone can be really scary. I don't blame you for freaking out a bit. Will it help if I absolutely promise not to even hint to her that we ever had this conversation? Cause I won't, I swear on my pockets."

Even if she was still a little miffed about the 'wrong person' comment. But then, she hadn't understood what he'd meant by that.

Your gleeing wasn't as subtle as you thought, Kathy.

"Yes. I know you won't say anything," Barry agreed. "Just don't get so giddy when I talk about feelings and shit. Especially if she catches wind of it."

"I'll try to hold back my enthusiasm when a friend shows signs of increased emotional maturity," Kathy said, rolling her eyes. "But she's not gonna catch wind of it until you're ready to tell her. And when she does, I can pretend to have never heard anything about it, if you like."

She reached out to slug him lightly in his upper arm. "I totally ship this. I want everything to work out as best it can. Whatever I need to do to make that happen, I will."

"You ship this? So help me if you give us a horrible name smooah, I'm going on every patrol you go on and declaring to the populace that your code name is Rainbow Brite. "
