Second Floor Common Room; Friday Evening [09/01].

The need for parties and the social status assumed to go along with them was probably the easiest part of roboSummer's programming, easily the best lynch pin that connected the two Summer, that would make someone look at her eagerness to host a party and thinking yup, definitely Summer, nothing wrong here! She'd decked the place out with glitter and streamers, started pumping some sweet tunes, and made sure all the food and beverages were readily available and spread out on the table and counters.

And now all she needed was people.

...she really hoped there would be people, but, unlike OG Summer, she would definitely survive if there weren't.

Whoo, party!

"Sounds like you'll be working in the right place to do it," Tip said. "Plus, there's the library. I work over there and they have books on basically everything."

"I haven't visited the library yet."

Breq put that on her mental list of things to do.

"It has books about this world too, doesn't it?"

Which would be useful too.

"This one, and lots of others besides. There . . . might even be books comparing worlds? But don't quote me on that."

It did seem like something that would be worth writing about though. Tip still had her idea of being an interdimensional anthropologist in her head.

"I'll see what I can find, then," Breq replied. "So you work in the library?"

"On Mondays, yeah," Tip said. "And I was on student council last year, so I might try that again. Honestly, classes are so low key here that sometimes it's hard to find enough stuff to do not to get bored."

"That's my impression too." Which didn't bother her that much. Breq had other things she needed to think about too.

"What do you think you'll get up to, then?" Tip asked. "Other than classes and work? What do you like to do for fun?"

If Breq's facial expressions weren't deliberate, she would looked confused and surprised at the question.

"I listen to music."

During her two thousand years as a ship, that was what she had done for fun.

"Oh. Okay." Tip nodded. "Do you ever try making your own?"

She was used to singing. She was used to having many bodies who could sing together. Her officers had been used to it, and had even been wondering what was going on when she had stopped.

But even Breq was aware that her only remaining body had a voice that was hardly pleasant. That didn't stop her from humming, or occasionally singing along the songs from the CD, but she could hardly claim to be a musician. And even before, she had created no music herself.

"No," she replied. "I've never tried. Do you?"

"A little bit, in elementary school," Tip said. "I wanted to learn how to play for real, but we didn't have the money for it. Then I just kind of . . . forgot, I guess." Her life got busy there for a bit and her thoughts turned more towards 'stop J.Lo and the neighbors from accidentally killing each other'. "Maybe I should come by the shop sometime, see if any of the instruments look fun."

"You should," Breq replied. "You could show me music you like at the same time."

There was no contradiction in trying to sell CDs and asking customers to tell you which ones they liked.

Hey, you had to learn somehow.

"That sounds like fun," Tip agreed. "What day do you work?"

"Wednesdays," Breq replied. "I'm guessing you know where it is."

The town wasn't that big.

It really wasn't.

"I know where it was," Tip said. "I think it moved, but I can find it."

"I heard something about... shark attacks?" Breq said. "No details though."

"We got hit by a hurricane," Tip said. "Which apparently picked up a bunch of sharks and flung them all over the island. You can't really blame them for smashing into things and biting people."

"It... would be expected, under the circumstances, yes," Breq said. "Is the weather usually that bad?"

"No, usually it's nice. We'll get snow storms sometimes in the winter, but other than that, it's pretty mild."

That didn't sound too bad, then.

"So have you been eating sharks since then? Provided they edible?"

This was meant to be said jokingly, but since neither Breq's voice nor her facial expression conveyed that, it might not be obvious.
