Second Floor Common Room; Friday Evening [09/01].

The need for parties and the social status assumed to go along with them was probably the easiest part of roboSummer's programming, easily the best lynch pin that connected the two Summer, that would make someone look at her eagerness to host a party and thinking yup, definitely Summer, nothing wrong here! She'd decked the place out with glitter and streamers, started pumping some sweet tunes, and made sure all the food and beverages were readily available and spread out on the table and counters.

And now all she needed was people.

...she really hoped there would be people, but, unlike OG Summer, she would definitely survive if there weren't.

Whoo, party!

"That and the fact that humans haven't made it very far past their own moon, and Homeworld is in a completely different galaxy," Peridot noted. "They'll probably drive themselves to extinction long before they ever find their way to us."

"That's my understanding," Peridot replied with a shrug. "It's a shame. Earth really is a beautiful planet."

Humans, though. Humans were dumb.

"I've never come across an Earth in my universe. Which doesn't mean it doesn't exist, of course, but if it does it must be far away."

"Some universes with humans don't appear to have Earths," Peridot noted, thoughtfully. "I have a friend or two from here who would never have known what Earth was, if not for Fandom. It's interesting that they'd evolve the same way, given such vastly different circumstances."

She paused, and then added, "Although some appear to have powers, and others don't."

Evolution was weird.

"Abilities that go above and beyond baseline human," Peridot offered. "Like..."

She looked around for a moment, and then held up a finger. A fork lifted up from a nearby counter and floated across the room toward them.

"Powers?"

Breq remembered to actually look surprised. She was.

"And are powers like that typical for your species?"

She watched the fork float in the air.

"Most Gems can do something," Peridot replied, grinning a little. "Me, I'm not supposed to be able to do this. Or... at least I was told I wasn't."

Breq had seen a lot of that. It rarely ended well for anyone.

"I believe that was the point," Peridot agreed, frowning. "I was made after the end of a rebellion that cost Homeworld... a lot. It would be logical to not let new Gems know what they're capable in order to prevent another from happening."

"Somebody I thought was a friend tried to throw something I spent a lot of time on into the ocean. I caught it."

"Not a very friendly thing to do," Breq noted. "So a sort of emergency. What was it? The thing you saved?"

"A robonoid," Peridot replied. Then paused, and clarified. "A robot. A duck. Sort of."

It fell short of actual duckness in a good many ways, unfortunately. Enough ways that Lucille had seen fit to try to throw it into the surf, at least.

"I leave it in my room, these days, unless I'm working on it." She smiled faintly. "That, I would consider artificial. But it's one of the first things I ever made just for myself."
