Right, showing Jaina how to cook. It couldn't be too hard, John reasoned. He was not a good cook by any stretch, but he was capable of boiling water and setting timers and following directions. The whole endeavor was more about showing her what cooking entailed in comparison to making a sandwich or microwaving popcorn rather than some sort of five course meal.

And he was prepared. He'd purchased ingredients, he'd gotten out pans. There would be spaghetti for dinner, and enough for everyone.

"Okay, so first, you know what a stove is, right?" John teased, rubbing his hands together. At least he hoped he was teasing.

"Good, he deserves to be problem-free for a while," John said.

"He does," she said. "So that was my night. How've you been?" Because it had been so long.

"Well, there was hanging out and working out and trying to sleep in class," John informed her. "So good." Distracted even.

"What, this morning?" So sue her, she actually paid attention in that class.

"I was tired," John said. "I heard you and other people being smart enough for us all."

"There are good points in there sometimes," Jaina said, watching the water.

"I'm sure there are, which is why I like to listen," he replied. "What's your non teacher answer for what you think your destiny is? Since we're waiting for water to boil here."

"The same as my teacher answer," Jaina said. "I have no idea yet. Maybe I'll never know. How about you? What do you think yours is?"

"No clue," John admitted. "I'm still working on the purpose of being at this school."

"Besides to keep me entertained?" she teased.

"Right, other than that," John smiled. Not to mention what it was supposed to mean for life in his little boring world next year. "Of course, entertaining you is a very big role."

Jaina smiled, and shrugged a bit. "Really, at this age I don't think anyone's supposed to know what their destiny is. I think I'd feel like I peaked if I knew."

"And it's nice to think we have a say in how things go," John added, glad to see the water had at least started to bubble.

Taking the spoon to stir the sauce, not sure if it should be bubbling or not yet, she said, "So, if you don't know your destiny yet, do you know what you'd like it to be?"

John shrugged, moving to ready the box of noodles, should the water get a rolling boil going sometime soon. "Be good at what I do. Be happy. You?"

"The same. Just with more stripes on my uniform maybe," she replied.

"Raring to lead?" he asked.

"I know I can," she said. "As much as I hate what happened at Sernpidal, I did make an entire military operation happen. And I like what I do, so with enough time, I figure..."

"Sounds like you have your future if not your destiny planned out for yourself." John nodded, as the water started bouncing and spraying as it boiled.

"Definitely not. I just have ideas," she admitted, taking a step back from any spraying hot water for the moment. "I think it's ready."

"It's nice and obvious like that." He held up the pasta. "Care to do the honors?"

"If you think you can take the extremely difficult job of watching the sauce," Jaina said, reaching for the box.

"I should be able to handle it," he said. relinquishing the pasta and taking over stirring duties. "So, you like lukewarm sauce, huh?"

She paused, taking the time to pour the pasta into the boiling water. "Maybe I do." No, she didn't.

"Oh, in that case I won't turn up the heat," he said, still stirring.
