Second Floor Common Room; Friday Evening [09/01].

The need for parties and the social status assumed to go along with them was probably the easiest part of roboSummer's programming, easily the best lynch pin that connected the two Summer, that would make someone look at her eagerness to host a party and thinking yup, definitely Summer, nothing wrong here! She'd decked the place out with glitter and streamers, started pumping some sweet tunes, and made sure all the food and beverages were readily available and spread out on the table and counters.

And now all she needed was people.

...she really hoped there would be people, but, unlike OG Summer, she would definitely survive if there weren't.

Whoo, party!

"Your colour I no one else's business," Breq said. "Or your heritage. Some people will always think themselves superior, for one reason or another."

"Well, that's their problem," Peridot muttered. "I'm tired of it."

She'd gotten enough of that on Homeworld.

"Understandable," Breq said. "Is there anything you like about this place though?"

Peridot paused at that. Gave that question the consideration she felt it deserved. And then nodded.

"I'm free."

It was as simple as that, really. She could be herself. SHe could be whatever she wanted to be.

"Freedom can be unexpected," Breq said. "And sometimes comes at a cost."

"I still haven't decided how I feel about the cost," Peridot noted, "but I'm finding that there are things about this planet that make freedom seem worthwhile."

"Other than freedom in itself?" Breq asked.

Peridot nodded.

"Friends," she offered. "New discoveries. A chance to discover who I am that I never would have had on Homeworld."

"Those are important things," Breq said. "All of them. Although finding out who you are isn't always easy."

She had seen humans struggle with it for two thousand years.

"It isn't," Peridot agreed. "It took me most of my time here just to accept that it was an option in the first place."

Breq could relate to that.

"I guess that's a good start."

She rubbed one of the pizza stains on her gloves.

Peridot glanced at the stained gloves, then looked down at her own hands.

"It's the best I've got," she settled on. "That will have to do."

"Any plans for now?" Breq asked. "More specific ones?"

Somehow Peridot didn't strike her as someone who liked to sit around idly.

"Learn about the Earth," Peridot replied with a shrug. "If I can't go home, the least I can do is ready myself to spend my life in the next best thing. It's difficult to make plans beyond that until I have my bearings."

"That's my plan too, for now," Breq replied. "It's always a good place to start."

"You aren't from Earth either, then?"

That was kind of reassuring, actually. Perdiot always felt like she had that little bit more in common with people who weren't familiar with the planet they were on.

"No. I'm from what I've learnt is another universe. A part of it called the Radch. I've traveled a lot." That part was easy to be honest about.

"I didn't expect to find myself enrolled in a school, but for now I don't have anything better to do."

It could be a good place to make plans. And to learn to act more like a human, but that hadn't been a problem here so far, perhaps because the population was so diverse and no one knew about ancillaries.

"It passes the time," Peridot allowed. "And it's been an educational experience so far. I hope you find it to be the same."

"So far it's been mostly introductions," Breq said. "But I'll get something out if them, I'm sure."

She'd been spared the really strange ones. Although she wasn't entirely sure about the artifacts one.

"And I didn't mean to offend you in class, by the way," she added. "Asking questions about your species. Considering your experiences I realize it could have been seen that way."

Peridot shook her head a little.

"It was an interesting conversation, and gave me more to think about. I'd never considered myself to be an artificial being before. It was... odd. New."

Breq had known all her life that she was artificial, of course.

"Odd? Perhaps it is when you first think about it."

Well, when your entire species was a manufactured race and you had no real understanding of how other species went about making more, the idea of being artificial really wouldn't have any conext behind it.

"... It's still odd, almost a week later," Peridot noted. "We really don't think of ourselves that way. Engineered, certainly, but..." She shrugged. "I feel real enough to me."

"Being artificial doesn't mean you aren't real," Breq pointed out. "Merely that your origin is different. It could be consciousness that makes the difference, but that's open for philosophical debate."

"I'm no good at philosophy," Peridot noted, frowning a little. "It just seems to me that your definition of 'artificial' comes with a very human-influenced bias. The same way that my own difficulty accepting it comes from a very... Gem mindset."

"Interesting. Well, I suppose it does." Breq had spent all her life with humans, not that they had paid much attention to her as anything other than a tool.

"What would the Gem perspective be?"
