So, Summer had planned to go out for decorating for her New Years party, but Summer underestimated Summer's own laziness, and anyone coming in the room could clearly see where she started with all the streamers and glitter and balloons and where she started to just lose interest and get bored and just kind of said 'fuck it.' It really didn't help that it turned out her name for the party was too long even for the banner, so there hung over the food table something that just simply read: "New Years Party All Night Because Who Even Cares Tha"

Which seemed appropriate enough.

She didn't get lazy about the food, though, and she definitely didn't get lazy about the drinks, so there was that. And so now she just had to hope everyone got the invitation in some way or another and that they'd show up but people here were weird about parties. But, hey, she'd take partying by herself if it came down to it over sitting in her room by herself on New Years Eve.

"Not too bad. Did you celebrate the holiday?"

Breq did remember to smile.

"Yeah, me and Mom and J.Lo. It's not quite the same as how the rest of the worlds do it, but we had fun. What'd you get up to?"

She was guessing Breq hadn't celebrated.

Tip guessed correctly.

"No celebrating. It was quiet here, so I mostly listened to music and watched entertainments. I'm looking forward to classes starting again."

Boredom was another good reason to go to a party.

Tip almost never looked forward to classes starting again. "What are you taking this semester?"

"Music Appreciation and Urban Survival," Breq replied. "And you?"

"Let's see," Tip said, looking up thoughtfully. "Mythology, weaponry, art, and American history. It's probably the closest I've had yet to a 'regular' class schedule at this school."

"It is?" Breq said. "I'm especially looking forward to the music class."

Surprising no one.

"No kidding," Tip said with a smile. "I took that awhile back, It was fun. Back home we do, like, history and language and math and science as the basics, then art and music and stuff we can add on if we want."

"Not poetry?" Breq asked. "That's quite important for a Radchaai."

Tip shrugged. “That gets covered in English class sometimes.”

"It's not considered as important everywhere, I suppose," Breq said. "You can't imagine the amount of bad poetry I've read."

“Probably not,” Tip agreed. “If it’s anything like novels or music here, I’m guessing a hell of a lot.”

"Too many of my officers wrote poetry in secret," Breq said. "The secret part being a good thing. Any examples of bad music and novels?"
