So, Summer had planned to go out for decorating for her New Years party, but Summer underestimated Summer's own laziness, and anyone coming in the room could clearly see where she started with all the streamers and glitter and balloons and where she started to just lose interest and get bored and just kind of said 'fuck it.' It really didn't help that it turned out her name for the party was too long even for the banner, so there hung over the food table something that just simply read: "New Years Party All Night Because Who Even Cares Tha"

Which seemed appropriate enough.

She didn't get lazy about the food, though, and she definitely didn't get lazy about the drinks, so there was that. And so now she just had to hope everyone got the invitation in some way or another and that they'd show up but people here were weird about parties. But, hey, she'd take partying by herself if it came down to it over sitting in her room by herself on New Years Eve.

Come admire the half-done decorations and make sure to remark to every newbie about how they survived their first night!

There's pizza, of course, an insane amount of pizza, in fact. Chips, soda, punch (both spiked and not spiked, but Summer thought it would be fun not to label them), jello shots, a disgusting jello mold monstrosity, and a somewhat sad looking vegetable platter for anyone trying to actually be healthy or something.

And of course...red solo cups.

The countdown is beginning, so get ready to grab something, make some noise, and cheer on the new year.

Kissing is totally not required...but definitely encouraged.

Upeth early so that we mighteth engage in the slowest of plays!

I need a vacation.

Breq had no idea what to expect from a New Years party here, but she was sure the decorations wasn't quite up to standard. She didn't care however, she was here to talk to people, not to admire glitter.

Breq grabbed a slice of pizza. She considered trying the jello thing, but decided to wait until someone else had. Not that she hadn't seen worse things on a dinner table, but no one had ever thought to offer it to an ancillary.

"Faaancy," Peridot said, admiring the half-done decorations, holding Pumpkin in her hands in front of her. "I like what you've done with the place!"

... Look, whenever she went back to her own Earth, she lived in a barn. Peridot had different standards than some.

Any date for a New Year was symbolical rather than actual, but it could be important anyway. Breq didn't think it was for her, but she raised a cup of something she wasn't sure what it was, at least doing something to join in.

Somehow, Norman had survived his first night. Which wasn't exactly a great feat or anything, but since he didn't have much experience sleeping in unfamiliar beds, or sharing the room with people, he had started to wonder. Aaaaand now he was here, looking about as awkward as he had under the tree, but with far less staring in bemusement at random points in thin air.

Yep. Here to party. Norman Babcock, party guy.

Maybe he'd find a quiet corner, gamble on which punch was which, and just kind of people-watch for a bit.

Awkward person she didn't recognize. Probably a new student, then. As someone who had been her a while now, Breq decided to figure out whether the new student wanted company or just preferred a quite corner. Some people did, after all.

She walked up to him and said: "Hello. I don't think I have to ask you if you're new here." Then she remembered to smile.

"It's that obvious, is it?" Norman smiled back, and then shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah, I got here yesterday. I wasn't expecting to get a party invitation quite so quickly, but I'm not going to complain about it, either."

"Don't expect parties to happen every week though. I'm Breq, by the way."

So, not someone who preferred a quiet corner.

"Norman," came the reply with a little wave of his hand. "And don't worry, I know New Years is a once a year thing. I plan on keeping my expectations at a reasonable low from here on."

So this was a party.

Theron had a cup filled with ~~water~~ something, and was sipping it to avoid talking and revealing he had no idea what to do.

"Nice to meet you, Norman," Breq replied. "This is the first New Years celebration in this universe for me, so you might know more what to expect than I do, depending on where you're from."

She assumed he (she was guessing he) had been introduced to the multiverse concept already, and if not, she would explain.

"Breq!" Summer smiled to see the other girl, who always seemed to make it to these things even if they never really gelled on a very deep level, but that was okay! "Thanks for coming! Do you guys celebrate New Years where you're from?"

"In some places, in others not," Breq replied. She didn't mind Summer, or her parties, even if she didn't think they would ever really be properly friends. Just a hunch. "Thank you for making the effort to arrange this."

"Well, this is my first New Years celebration being aware that there even are other universes," Norman replied, smiling faintly, "so who even knows if the traditions I know of are even relevant here?"

Tip tried not to miss Summer's parties as a general rule. When they were also full of new students?

Heck yeah, she was here.

"Good to see someone's priorities are well in order."

"Heya Norman. You showed. Wasn't actually totally sure you would."

"Hey, Tip, I showed," Norman replied, smiling a little. "I wasn't actually totally sure I would, either. But... I mean, if I pass up my first party invitation, Grandma would never forgive me."

"Hey, Breq! How's it going?"

"Is your world similar to this one?" Breq asked.

"I think I like your grandma," Tip said. "She sounds like she knows what's up."

"Not too bad. Did you celebrate the holiday?"

Breq did remember to smile.
