Summer's New Years Party; Second Floor Common Room; Sunday Night [12/31].

So, Summer had planned to go out for decorating for her New Years party, but Summer underestimated Summer's own laziness, and anyone coming in the room could clearly see where she started with all the streamers and glitter and balloons and where she started to just lose interest and get bored and just kind of said 'fuck it.' It really didn't help that it turned out her name for the party was too long even for the banner, so there hung over the food table something that just simply read: "New Years Party All Night Because Who Even Cares Tha"

Which seemed appropriate enough.

She didn't get lazy about the food, though, and she definitely didn't get lazy about the drinks, so there was that. And so now she just had to hope everyone got the invitation in some way or another and that they'd show up but people here were weird about parties. But, hey, she'd take partying by herself if it came down to it over sitting in her room by herself on New Years Eve.

"Nice to meet you, Norman," Breq replied. "This is the first New Years celebration in this universe for me, so you might know more what to expect than I do, depending on where you're from."

She assumed he (she was guessing he) had been introduced to the multiverse concept already, and if not, she would explain.

"Well, this is my first New Years celebration being aware that there even are other universes," Norman replied, smiling faintly, "so who even knows if the traditions I know of are even relevant here?"

"Is your world similar to this one?" Breq asked.

Norman shrugged his shoulders a bit.

"From what I've seen in this place, I'm pretty sure no world is similar to here," he pointed out.

He really didn't have experience with the Earth across the causeway.

"You have a point," Breq replied. "But I meant a place where people live on a similar version of Earth in about the same time. I had never heard of this planet when I arrived here."

"Well, I am from Earth," Norman replied, "from... a year ago today, I guess. I don't really know if it's similar to this one, though. I haven't been to this one, outside the Portalocity lounge at the airport."

"I suppose you can find out if you want to," Breq said. "How do you plan to celebrate tonight?"

"Well, I had mostly just been planning on spending a quiet night in my room," Norman confessed. "Now that I'm here, I guess I'm going to... get to know people? I guess?"

"Good start."

Breq glanced across the room. "I don't think there is anyone I should warn you about."

That was a joke, although Breq had been in many places where it wouldn't have been, and she forgot to smile.

And that mostly just left Norman wondering if she was joking at all. He thought she was? Probably she was?

"That's, um, good?" He super wasn't sure, though. "Are there any people around the island that I should watch out for?"

Now he was paranoid.

"It was a joke," Breq said, now adding a quick smile. "People here are mostly friendly, friendlier than in most places I've been, in fact. Oh, so I don't make a mistake, you use 'he' as pronoun, right?"

Best to ask. She was getting better at guessing, though.

"I hope your big sibling told you about some of the peculiarities of this place, though."

"I... do," Norman confirmed, scratching his head, and then shrugging. "And you're... she?"

Now he was wondering if he was supposed to ask that of everyone he met.

He was so bad at people.

"And I guess my big sibling was my first experience with the peculiarities of this place. Sidon's not from anywhere around Earth, you know?"

Also he was a large happy shark guy.

"I don't care much, but 'she' is fine," Breq said. "I know Sidon, and he's not from anywhere around my universe either. He is very kind and generous, though."

In case Norman's first impression had been overwhelming.

Norman nodded a little.

"He did seem kind and generous, yeah," he agreed. "And enthusiastic."

He was pretty sure the enthusiasm would take more getting used to than the toothy grin.

"He is," Breq agreed. "It might take a little while to get used to him, but it's worth it. Did he tell you about the other peculiarities around here?"

"Not... really," Norman said, hesitantly. "A few people mentioned strange timelines. And, uh, invasions?"

Well, the invasions hadn't been mentioned to him so much as he'd noticed a bunch of really unusual ghosts, and he'd asked about them.

"But if there's anything weirder than the occasional attack..."

"There are things that are mostly just annoying," Breq replied. "Candy raining from the skies, plants trying to force you to kiss, strange things happening in the shop where I work. That sort of thing."

There was a silence from Norman, then, that spanned on for a few seconds while he gaped in brief incomprehension at Breq.

"... Candy raining from the skies?"

His big sibling was an anthropomorphic shark. He knew he shouldn't be surprised. But, hey, here he was.

"Yes. I know it sounds unbelievable, but you'll get used to it. Sort of."

She paused.

"I haven't met someone yet who comes from a place where that is normal."

"There's a children's song about that sort of thing," Norman said, thoughtfully. Still a bit weirded-out, but thoughtful. "About if all the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops. But... it's supposed to be kind of ridiculous. It's not really normal."

"A song? Can you sing it for me?"

Suddenly this conversation got a lot more interesting.

Norman's eyes went kind of wide at that request.

"I mean. I probably could? But it's a really, really silly song. And I'm not good at singing..."

And there were people here, and it was his first full day on the island and he already had people who thought he was the weird kid, and singing a song meant for preschool kids at a New Year's party full of cool people was probably the most efficient form of social-life suicide that he could possibly concieve of.

"I have a terrible voice myself," Breq said. "Yours can hardly be worse, and I sing anyway. You don't have to sing all of it."

She wouldn't push him too far about it, but she really did want to hear the song.

"If it makes a difference I can sing one for you afterwards."

"That... sounds like a fair trade-off," Norman said. He didn't sound entirely convinced, mind.

Still, he took a deep breath, and then started to sing.

He stopped there, blushing. A lot.

"It goes on with snowflakes and sunbeams, too, but... you get the idea."

He hoped she got the idea. He was considering hiding behind the couch forever.

Breq made sure to smile encouragingly. "Thank you. That song is really appropriate in this place."

She continued: "This one has a thousand verses, but I'll only sing you two of them:
