The Pool; Monday [04/24].

In case you hadn't heard, either via the flyers that had been plastered around the dorms, the text messages sent out that morning, the radio or the announcements being made from the desk yesterday, there was a party in the dorms that day! Down by the pool, specifically! With no classes to attend to, all that was left to do was come on down and have a good time!

There were decorations! There was pizza! There were drinks in coconuts, and some music pumping, and none of them had anywhere school-related they needed to be! Time to celebrate another successful semester in the books.

Water you waiting for? Come make a splash!

"Me neither." Beta couldn't place the accent, but between that and the halting speech it was a reasonable thing to deduce. She gestured to herself. "Beta."

That got a genuine, unrestrained smile out of Beta. "I'm from centuries away too, but here. Sort of."

She was annoyed that such a simplified explanation was the best she could do, but languages hadn't exactly been on the curriculum she'd been allowed to access.

"How different?" Amicia asked, tilting her head. Curious.

"I came from a long time into the future," Beta began, and gestured upwards. "On... a ship. Among the stars."

Amicia glanced up instinctively, which was-- silly. She realized that. "The stars?" she asked, looking back down.

It had been a silly gesture in the first place, to be fair.

Beta nodded. "In space, yes. Getting to Earth was the first time I saw real trees." Real anything, more accurately."

She tilted her head, gave Amicia a curious look. "What year was it, back home?"

Ah, yes. The number. She had learned, though she sounded very deliberate as she spoke it. "1349."

Not much of the Earth history Beta had studied went back that far, having been deemed irrelevant to her knowledge base. Big surprise, that, a privileged bunch of ultra-rich people dismissing anything they thought was too primitive, but in its way that too was context.

She pulled up a quick search on her Focus. Ah. Early Middle Ages, and oh, there was a lot here she'd have to read up on later.

"3041," she replied. "We're both a long way from where we came from."

"Yes. That is true," Amicia said. And finally-- finally-- she picked a spot beside Beta's lounge chair, on a little wall, and sat down. "It is tiring. No?"

She was always quite tired.

"Everything being so unfamiliar all the time?" Beta offered her a small smile. "It's exhausting."

It had been a lot of whiplash going from one technological extreme to the other (sort of) before ending up here, somewhere in the middle.

Amicia nodded. She put her hands in her lap. "I was-- in mountains," she said. "Alone. Then here. Picnic. Everyone talks many."

That was... a little horrifying.
