Second Floor Common Room [evening]

Rory was bored, so after a quick run into town to pick up some Ching Tai to share, she made herself comfortable in the common room with all three King of the Bracelets movies and started with the first.

She was fully prepared to helpfully point out the symbolism and archetypes to anyone who seemed to be missing them.

"Maybe not that precisely, but no bit of combat training is useless," Peter said. He shrugged. "Least that's what I've been told too many times."

"I can believe that," Luke said after he thought about it. "Reflexes are reflexes, right?"

"There's all the fancy bits of using a sword or lightsaber or one's hands and feet, but it really does all come down to reflexes and instinct," Peter agreed.

"I'm good with instinct," Luke said, sounding a little more defensive than would be considered strictly necessary. "Ben said that was the Force working through me."

Peter nodded. "Not like there's much time to think when you're fighting anyway. You rather have to trust in your training and feelings." He shrugged. "Though I don't do anything with magic."

Luke shrugged back. "At this point, neither do I. Or I do and don't know it. I'm coming way late to this training."

"It did seem like they started training very young," Peter agreed. "And it sounds like your Ben thought you did have a connection with it."

Luke nodded. "He'd been a Jedi with my father," he said. "I think that's why my uncle wouldn't let me talk with him when I was a kid."

"Your uncle didn't approve of the Jedi? Peter asked dubiously.

"My uncle didn't approve of much at all, but especially not the Jedi," Luke said.

"What exactly is it about 'guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy' that it's possible to disapprove of?" Peter asked. Then he quickly added. "I apologise. I don't mean to insult your relation."

Luke pressed his lips together. "The story the Empire put out--why they said the Jedi needed to be destroyed--was that they'd tried to take over the Republic. Since the next thing that happened was the end of the Republic, I call banthashit." He shrugged. "And I can't imagine my uncle was entirely thrilled to be forced to raise the son of a Jedi."

Peter raised an eyebrow. "That doesn't quite follow logically, does it. If the Jedi were a force against the Republic - which doesn't make sense in the first place - then the Republic ought to have been strengthened with their loss."

"Exactly," Luke said, warming to his subject. "But the Empire forbids knowledge about the Jedi. People here know more than people at home do."

"Though to be fair, here it was just weeks ago that the Flight class travelled to Coruscant. Your people at home have been under the sway of a new government for years," Peter replied.

Luke nodded. "And the Empire has been ruthless about people who ask questions or complain too loudly."

"But the Empire is still over so many hundreds of planets, right?" Peter asked, still not quite comprehending the enormity. "How does Emperor know who is saying what on a planet thousands of miles away?"

"Informants," Luke said with a bitter twist to his mouth. "Vader's manipulation of the Force. The regional governors. He's enslaved entire worlds just to make a point about rebellion. Alderaan was just the next step."

Peter listened and felt like he was listening to the tales in Narnia about life under the White Witch. "What happened on Alderaan?"

"The entire planet?"

It took Peter a long, long time to process that. "If you ever need my sword, it's at your service to help destroy him and his Empire."
