The Deck [Saturday Night]

It had been a weird day, between the guy at the diner freaking out and Dinah heading out of town. Claire decided to head out to the deck with a pitcher of iced tea and enjoy the evening.

She idly considered building a fire, but decided against it because of the heat.

Jennifer joined Claire out on the deck. "Wow," she said. "I almost feel like I'm back in California."

Claire grinned. "Yeah, this is like May weather in Texas."

"They didn't secretly move the island on us, did they?" Jennifer asked.

"I would hope we would have noticed something like that," Claire joked.

"They could have done it when we were all sleeping," Jennifer said.

Ellie didn't feel like staying indoors today, so she headed out to the deck. "Hey, Claire."

"Hi, Ellie," Claire said, waving. "Want some iced tea?"

Ellie took a seat on a chair. "Oh, sure. I would love some."

Claire poured her a glass, well, a plastic cup and handed it to her. "How's it going?"

"Thanks," Ellie said appreciatively, taking a sip. "I'm being lazy today."

"Hi Ellie," Jennifer said with a friendly wave.

"Hey," Ellie replied, waving back. "Nice night, huh?"

"If a little warm," Jennifer said. "Almost reminds me of home."

Ellie nodded. "At least the humidity isn't so bad back home."

It wasn't that Joolushko had an urge to socialize or anything like that. Socializing with inferior species wasn't something that she did on a regular basis. Or an irregular basis for that matter. She simply wanted some fresh air and the deck had seemed like an appropriate place to go. If she had to suffer the company of her fellow students, well, she could manage. Just this once.

She could even manage a greeting to the people already out there. A civil one. "Hello." See? Civil if not exactly friendly.

"Hello," Claire said, trying not to stare at the new girl who had joined them. "Want some iced tea?"

"Is that sweet?" Joolushko asked, somewhat hopefully. One good thing about this place was that sweet things were readily available.

Claire was a Southern girl; of course the tea was sweet. "Yep, it's sweet tea."

"Then yes. If it's sweet, I'll try it."

Polite people might say thanks for the offer. Joolushko wasn't polite people.

Jennifer waved, happily. "I love your hair, she said.

Joolushko looked at the girl suspiciously for a moment before deciding accepting compliments, was, well, acceptable. And her hair was fabulous. And not even bright red at the moment, which was really a good thing for all concerned parties.

"Thank you."

"I'm Jennifer," she said. "I don't think we've met."

"Hey," Ellie said, waving to the girl she had met at the welcome picnic a few weeks ago. "Are you settling in okay?"

"I'm adjusting," Joolushko said after thinking about the question. "Yes."

No, it didn't even occur to her to ask how Ellie was.

"It's hard to get used to this place," Ellie admitted. "So it's good that you're adjusting well enough."
