Summer's New Years Party; Second Floor Common Room; Sunday Night [12/31].

So, Summer had planned to go out for decorating for her New Years party, but Summer underestimated Summer's own laziness, and anyone coming in the room could clearly see where she started with all the streamers and glitter and balloons and where she started to just lose interest and get bored and just kind of said 'fuck it.' It really didn't help that it turned out her name for the party was too long even for the banner, so there hung over the food table something that just simply read: "New Years Party All Night Because Who Even Cares Tha"

Which seemed appropriate enough.

She didn't get lazy about the food, though, and she definitely didn't get lazy about the drinks, so there was that. And so now she just had to hope everyone got the invitation in some way or another and that they'd show up but people here were weird about parties. But, hey, she'd take partying by herself if it came down to it over sitting in her room by herself on New Years Eve.

Norman nodded his head.

"Very real," he replied. "A lot of people don't really believe in them, but... they are."

"Why don't they believe in them?"

In a world where ghosts existed that seemed a reasonable question.

"Because a lot of people don't believe in things they can't prove are real," Norman replied. "When it has something to do with death, maybe they'd rather not try to prove it at all."

"Can't they see them? Or are there just very few of them?"

She could see that this was important to him.

Norman shook his head.

"There are lots of ghosts out there," he replied. "Death goes way back. The living are only now. But most people can't see them. Not even most of the ones who want to be seen."

"And you can?"

That explained why this was important to him.

And now, Norman was fidgeting a little, toying with the edges of his noisemaker and kind of scuffing one toe against the floor.

He nodded. He could.

"Are some of them your friends? Is that why you care about them?"

Had she only had experience of her own world, Breq would have been suspicious of his claim, but she had been living in Fandom for a while.

"Some of them," Norman replied. "But... people don't have to be friends to be deserving of care."

Norman cared about a lot of people he didn't even necessarily like. Care was complicated, that way.

Care was very complicated. Breq knew that well.

"True. But that's often a reason for people to care. Not always though, I know that."

Norman just nodded a little, again.

"They're just like everyone else," he replied. "Usually. The ones who haven't been consumed by fear and anger."

"That could happen to the living too," Breq pointed out.

Possibly even to ships, although she hadn't met one. The programming set some limits, perhaps.

"Yeah," Norman replied, "but when it happens to the living, there's at least a chance that the living can do something about it."

"The dead can't help each other?"

She wasn't sure if ships could either, if it went against their orders. Until very recently she wouldn't have considered the need.

"Some can, most can't," Norman replied. "Ghosts are... they're a very specific sort of person. The ones who have something they still need to finish doing, or the ones who weren't expecting to die. Usually they're too preoccupied with their own problems to be able to help others with theirs. That's just their nature."

"Did you help them?" Breq asked. "Before you came here?"

"When I could," Norman replied. "When they wanted me to, and sometimes when there was no choice, whether they wanted me to or not."

"Will you miss them?"

Unless there were ghosts here, but Breq felt she should have noticed them by now if there were.

There were ghosts everywhere. They weren't always human. There weren't even necessarily very many. But where death happened, ghosts often did.

Granted, most of them were monsters that had been killed in invasions.

"I miss some. I made a lot of friends back home, too."

Breq wasn't sure if he meant only ghost friends or human ones too, but she didn't ask.

"Did you choose to come here?"

"I did," Norman replied, smiling a little. "My grandma thought it would be good for me. So far, I don't think she's wrong."

Breq made sure she smiled back. "I hope you'll feel at home. I'm not sure if there are any ghosts, though."

"Mostly, it's been weird animals," Norman replied with a shrug. "Dinosaurs, some slug things. Sharks? The sharks are weird."

But at least you knew he wasn't making it up that way?

"Slugs with sharp teeth?"

So, he could see ghosts everywhere.

"A big ring of them, yeah," Norman confirmed. "They seem less resigned to being dead than most of the other ghosts, though. I think they're newer."
