Second Floor Common Room [evening]

Rory was bored, so after a quick run into town to pick up some Ching Tai to share, she made herself comfortable in the common room with all three King of the Bracelets movies and started with the first.

She was fully prepared to helpfully point out the symbolism and archetypes to anyone who seemed to be missing them.

"I'm Luke Skywalker," he replied, handing her a napkin, "and chopsticks are evil."

"Thank you! And I'm beginning to think so. I almost hurt myself on them a moment ago." She dabbed at the stain, and gave up after a moment, smiling a little. "Are you new here? And are you a sophomore too?"

"I'm new, but I'm a junior," Luke said.

"Have you used chopsticks before?" Evie finally gave up on them, and decided that if she could eat curry vindaloo with her fingers, than certainly a spring roll would be fine. "We didn't have Chinese food in London, so this is the first time I've tried it."

"We don't either," Luke said, stabbing at his carton with a fork. "But we're not exactly known for our culinary skills on Tatooine."

"What is Ta-too-ine known for?" Evie asked, careful with her pronunciation. "And is that a town, or a country I haven't heard of before?"

"It's known for sand. And corruption. And sand," Luke said. "It's a different planet--far, far away from here."

"I miss sand," Evie said sadly. "But then again, Cairo was sometimes corrupt, and that's why we had to move away. Or part of it, anyway." She took another glop of rice and ate it carefully. "Do you miss your home?"

"Not even a little bit," Luke said vehemently. "Where's Cairo?"

"Other side of the planet, next to the Sahara. It's on a river, the Nile. It's fabulously ancient and multicultural and huge." She sighed, then cocked her head. "So you're another alien? Did you get here in a ship? Or on a broom?"

"I'm not an alien," Luke said quickly. "I'm human, just from another planet. And I flew here in my starfighter."

Evie nodded with her mouth full, blinking a bit, then swallowed and said, "Starfighter? So, it's like a, a, fighting craft? Ooooo."

"X-wing class," Luke said, nodding, "and fully armed. Just in case, you know?"

"In case of pirates?" Evie asked hopefully.

Luke laughed. "Not exactly."

Evie looked disappointed, and blushed a little. "No, of course not, that would be silly. So, in case of-- what, then? And keep in mind," she swallowed some rice, "That I have even less technological knowledge than most in this room. In my time, they were just discovering how to make airplanes carry ammunition in combat."

Luke smiled. "Well, there's still the threat of piracy, but I was more worried about running into the Empire." He shrugged. "They're not exactly happy with me."

"Ohhh. Are you a criminal of some kind?" Evie looked semi-thrilled, and semi-worried. "Or just a non-citizen, er, non-subject?"

"I'm a rebel," Luke said. "The government at home is corrupt and evil."

"Ahhh. That's always difficult." Evie looked intimidated. "We had to leave Cairo because there were so many factions fighting the provisional government. And, well. My parents weren't certain which side they really wanted to win. So, we went back to my father's country." She blinked at him. "Have you been in fighting? Is that why you have, a, um, Starfighter?"

"Only recently," Luke said. "Things, um, changed at home and there wasn't really any other choice. The Rebellion's the group that decided I needed to come here to get a more well-rounded education."

Evie looked very sober for a moment, and said, "There's a war on in my time, too. Not in my country, but just over the Channel. Rather close, really. My brother would be fighting in it if he weren't in Cairo. That's why I'm here, my parents were nervous about the fighting." She swallowed another bite of rice, and asked, "So you're rejoining the Rebellion after you're done here? To fight this Empire? Are there a lot of Rebels?"

"That's the plan and I don't know," Luke said with a smile. "I'm very new to the organization and they are very smartly close-mouthed about who's running what where. We're trying to take down a galaxy-wide dictatorship. It's going to take a while."

"Goodness." Evie stared at him a moment, then offered, "Good luck? And, and, I hope you don't have to fight too much." She looked very sober. "The news reports from France are.. more than a little awful."

"We've definitely got to come up with a better plan than 'attack a space station, try not to die'," Luke agreed. "But I trust the people back home who are way better at this kind of thing than I am. My training's in a different direction."
