It smelled nice outside. Like spring!

But April, after her workout, smelled like... well, it wouldn't be ladylike to tell you. But it wasn't great.

So she was treating herself to a steaming hot shower in the locker room, and because it was so early in the morning (and sometimes she wasn't the most courteous to others), she set her phone to blast her favorite album there ever was: E•MO•TION.

What, a girl couldn't dance in the shower?

Now technically, as a resident of the dorms, April had a right to use the pool whenever she wanted, but even so she felt like she was sneaking in somewhere when she stopped by the dorm pool late Friday evening. Maybe it was the fact that it was dark and there was no one around, or maybe it was just lingering trepidation from all the times she had gone sneaking around back at camp last summer.

In any case, she had made up her mind that tonight she was going to deal with all of these extra hormones once and for all by sweating them out in a heated pool. It wasn't her best idea, but so far nothing else had worked. So, she toed off her shoes and socks, stripped off her outerwear leaving just a frilly tankini underneath (you didn't think this law-abiding Lumberjane would skinny-dip in a communal pool, did you?), took a seat on the edge and gingerly slid on in.

It did not have the instantaneous effect on her body that she was looking for, but maybe if she gave it a couple minutes.

April was wearing a glittery red bow in her hair and a pink dress that was totally unsuited for winter when she took her place at the table to sell tickets for this weekend's dance. She loved Valentine's Day, and while she didn't have a Valentine of her own (yet!) she was determined to uphold the spirit of the season with bold wardrobe choices and her naturally great attitude.

So! Get your tickets here, Fandom. April was going to smile at you until you did.

Okay, all this news about the alleged end of a certain boy band was toying with April's heart. She just couldn't handle the stress and uncertainty!

That was why she was currently eating her feelings in the common room, and in this case her feelings tasted a lot like cookie dough ice cream.

The TV was on, and insistently playing celebrity news talk shows although it was, in honesty, the last thing April wanted. How could these reporters be so cold about this?!

When April had sat down to think about her resolutions for the new year, coming to the gym more often wasn't on the list. She was all good on fitness. Getting out and talking to people more, making new friends, and scoring an invite to her very first high school party were much resolution-worthy goals.

But she still had a few days before she had to hold herself to those goals, so here she was for her morning workout. With her earbuds in her ears, she crammed weights onto a bar, perched in front of the mirror, and got to it. Hopefully, with the holidays and everything, traffic through the gym would be light enough that no one would hassle her for hogging the weights.

Today had been a busy day for April. After her morning workout, she had spent the day shopping for groceries before ultimately winding up here in the common room, where her mission for the evening was to make beignets. It was just a personal dream of hers to make beignets. Don't worry about it.

The process was pretty slow, and there was more than a little flour on her face by the end of it, but before too too long, she had a delicious batch ready for sharing.

Then she set the tray on the table for people to help themselves, took a seat on the couch, and kind of... dozed off.

Again, it had been a big day.

Well, the weather was getting colder, and with it, some of April's natural energy was dwindling. It was a little bit harder to love every day like it was the best day ever during the time of year when she had to wear long pants.

The best way to keep her spirits high when they ordinarily would be down in the dumps was to get some exercise, so here she was, doing her best to maintain a positive attitude.

She would just be over here in the weights section, starting off with a set of bench presses with a barbell significantly bigger than she was.

The homecoming dance was approaching, and April, a freshman who was way too proud of being on student council, was very excited for it.

So excited that she was spending her shift wondering if she should buy one ticket or two, for the boy she was going to ask. Oh, she didn't have anyone in mind yet, but it seemed fairly inevitable that she would ask someone. If she did wind up taking two, this mystery boy was going to wind up with a very glittery dance ticket, because sitting under the glittery sign meant that everything on the table was covered in glitter.

[[so sorry this is so late! i mean, i don't think anyone is surprised that i'm a flake, but i am and i'm terrible. apologies. vote for homecoming court here!]]

April took a step back from the wall where she had just posted her final flyer and admired her handiwork.

In bold, glittery text on cream construction paper, the flyer read:

Did you get scruffy in your time away from your parents?

Do you have a crush from home visiting that you're trying to impress?

Come to…

HAIRCUTS BY APRIL

6th Floor Girls' Bathroom

RIGHT NOW!

Reference photos or verbal descriptions accepted. Or let April go wild!

$5 per haircut, or trades accepted also.

Beneath the text, she had pasted a series of photos of makeovers she'd given over the years – Jo with side-bangs, Ripley's new 'do from the summer, and even a photo of Mal after she'd let April touch up her undercut.

With the last flyer posted, she pocketed the rest of her roll of tape and set off toward the sixth floor girl's bathroom. She figured there wouldn't be much call for the bathroom on the floor where no one lived, so it would be okay if she took up a lot of space and got some hair on the floor (which she planned to clean up, of course).

It took April several trips from her room to the bathroom to assemble everything she thought she needed. It wasn't just hair supplies, although she had plenty of those. She also stacked up some magazines on top of one of the sinks to give the whole place a real salon feel, and her laptop was around in case anyone wanted to watch a movie.

Then she propped open the door and waited for her first customers.

there is no chance i will get to pings at work today, but i wanted to get this posted early so i don't forget later.

It was the usual thing. One person ordering in, too much food showing up.

This time, that person was Ezra, the food was Chinese, and the former had probably had a hand in the overabundance of the latter. There was a small possibility he'd flirted at the person on the other end of the line and gotten them flustered and confused about his order. Oh, well. Maybe it would play out in favor of his laziness and lure people to him.

Or maybe the random, cheesy romantic comedy playing on the TV would appeal to people. He didn't judge. He just sprawled on a couch and ate tasty, tasty takeout from a carton. It was an okay way to spend a Saturday evening.

Not a great way, not a fantastic way, but an okay way. He was content enough for now.

April stepped into the common room and looked down.

"What the junk?"

Something sparkly had been -- sprinkled, or maybe smeared, across the floor. She knelt down to see what it was, and when she did she found... glitter.

Large, smooth specks of glitter, to be exact. The trail seemed relatively fresh; it hadn't quite made its way down into the fibers of the carpet yet, and it was very, very sparkly.

Puzzled, she scooped some up and inspected it more closely. She knee-walked forward, following the trail of glitter to what she assumed had to be some kind of x-marks-the-spot type of point, but that was a mistake, because by the time she made her way into a very uninteresting corner, she looked down and found herself absolutely sparkling with the stuff.

She stood up, disgusted, and wiped her sparkly palms on her sparkly shorts. "Mystery, 1; April, 0," she grumbled.

Well played, Fandom.

Face it: only having two classes, spaced out on different days of the week, wasn't exactly enough to keep a fourteen-year-old occupied. Sooner or later, April had time on her hands and decided she should explore.

Eventually she discovered the common room, and the wondrous amount of cooking supplies that lay within, and her squeals of delight could probably be heard from down the hall.

She cranked up the music on her phone loud enough that it could be heard through her headphones, and she got to baking. Well, dancing and baking. Cupcakes and Taylor Swift made for a good combination.
