There was an army waiting to greet the members of the Magic Reserves today: an army of practice dummies from the salle, standing at perfect attention behind the refreshment table. Crepe paper had been tied around each dummy's waist, with a long streamer left hanging down their sides. More rolls of crepe paper were resting on the refreshment table.

"Hey," Tony said. "We've got a cool activity today, but before we do that, Dinah's going to tell us about her abilities." He smiled at Dinah. "And if anyone wants to volunteer for next week, let us know."

He turned to Karla. "Wanna explain the activity?"

She nodded, before turning towards thr group. "Today, we're going to focus on the possibility that one day, we'll have to rescue prisoners and hostages from an invading enemy force," Karla said, giving everyone a cheerful smile. "While every step of an operation like that is difficult and fraught with danger, one of the most common mistakes people make is that assuming once they've freed their comrades, the hard part is over. Not only is that wrong, but it's the kind of thinking that can get people recaptured or even killed."

It was hard thinking like this in the face of enemies like carnivorous vegetables, but they had to be prepared.

Merlin shot her a slightly nervous smile as he stepped forward to add, "To keep that sort of thing from happening, we'll be running a practice at escaping with the dummies." The lovely, lovely dummies. "Whomever you are rescuing may be able to move on their own should this actually happen, but for this case we will assume the worst and they will be unable to walk for whatever reason. Which should make it--um--interesting to accomplish without being caught again."

"This is how it's going to work," Karla said, picking up the thread again. "Your dummy is your friend. Get him from one side of the Preserve to the other without him 'dying.'" She tugged on one of the crepe streamers attached to a dummy. "This is his 'life.' If this gets ripped off, your dummy is dead. Everyone who participates will also tie a streamer around their waist and the same rules apply. If your streamer is torn, you die and are 'out' for the rest of the round."

"Either singly or in pairs, people are going to try to rescue the dummies. Everyone who is not rescuing the dummy is a bad guy and will do their level best to stop the rescuers from getting back to their base. Rescuers can use whatever magic in their arsenal to keep their ward safe and to fight off attackers. Bad guys, you can't use magic--you've got numbers on your side. Feel free to use physical attacks all you want--but let's all be careful, okay? No clinic visits if we can avoid them."

"If you want to be a rescuer, but aren't comfortable using your power on other people, just let us know. We'll be happy to animate a few of these extra dummies to act as your antagonists. However, in that case, we'd be able to use magic on the bad guys' behalf, since there's no way they'd actually be able to actually fight you."

"If you have any questions before we begin, don't hesitate to ask, okay?"

Snacks today were the pure sugar variety - bowls full of leftover Halloween candy and a cooler full of sodas.  Tony stood at the front looking a little tired, a little beaten up and a little smug.  "Now we know vegetables aren't always good for us," he said.  "Today, Zack's going to talk about his magic and then we're going to do the post-battle rundown.  What worked for you yesterday?  Anything you wish you'd done differently?"

With the two--not three--leaders of the reserve, there was a falcon-y looking bird, trying to appear very cheerful about everything. And screeching occasionally to let them all know he wasfully on board with this meeting.

Yes.

Karla couldn't stop herself from shooting amused towrads Merlin, though she tried to keep her expression neutral whenever the bird glanced her way. "Just as important as your own actions, what could we as a group have done otherwise? If we'd had advanced warning, would we have done things differently? Better? We very much want to know your opinion. Non-mages should also feel free to chime in," she added. "We're here to work with everyone."

Tony nodded.  "That goes for all the time, actually.  Yeah, we're here to work on magic stuff, but we all gotta look out for each other." added. "We're here to work with everyone." He turned to Zack. "All right, you're up."

When people began arriving at the meeting today, they would see that things were a bit different than usual today. For one thing, the snack table has it's usual assortment of warm beverages, but was missing the normal variety of snacks and there were a handwavey number of wooden chests piled off to the side, each one sporting a heavy iron padlock on the front.

"Greetings," Karla said, looking a bit more composed than she had at the last meeting. "We've got a fair bit to do today, so we should probably get started quickly. First, we have a talk from Tara, who was kind enough to volunteer this week," she paused to give Tara a grateful smile, "and then, we have an activity."

Merlin nodded and stepped forward. "Inside these chests is... pie." Oh, it was so spooky and magical sounding. "But, as you see, they're rather firmly locked up. So, the exercise today will be to get the contents of the box--unharmed--using whatever skills you have at your
disposal."

Mmm, pie. "Fresh-baked," Tony added. "And if you get one out, it's all yours."

Karla was really regretting that the three of them hadn't had enough time to bake the pies themselves, but hopefully J,GoB pies would be an acceptable substitute. "So, let's give Tara our attention--and a pie of her own for volunteering--and then we'll see how well your pie-retrieving skills are."

There was even more food piled on the tables than usual today. Karla had taken the term 'comfort food' to new and interesting heights--specifically the tower of cupcakes from J,Gob. There was also a new beverage joining the ranks of coffee, tea, and juice: mulled cider, kept warm by little tongues of witchfire. There wasn't the traditional alcohol in there yet, but after the meeting broke up, if there was any left, odds were pretty good she'd be adding some.

"Hey everyone," she said, trying to sound friendly and enthusiastic and falling rather flat. "Good to see you. Uhhh..."

Having quickly run out of words, she looked to Tony or Merlin to take up the conversation.

Merlin stepped forward, smiling in hopes of distracting people with his ears bit of the speech.

...alright, and his ears.

"We'll be learning from you today, those who volunteered last week will be sharing a little bit about their abilities. Won't that be
fun?" He asked, sounding a bit like an overly excited pre-school teacher.

"Or at least useful, we hope," Tony said. "... okay, I feel like we should have an animated logo and jingle here. 'The More You Know!' But think about ways these guys' abilities could work with yours, or see if you can come up with an unusual way for them to use their powers."

Karla was confused by the reference, but wasn't particularly concerned. "In that case, I'd like to welcome Raven and Leda to come up and share. Also, you guys totally get first dibs on the cupcakes for being brave."

At the reserve today there was a surplus of pies from J, GoB. So everyone could do their part in making sure no one had cursed the shop while they were away. This was a high priority, see?

"Welcome back from vacation everyone," Merlin said with a bright smile. "We hope you all had fun on your week off and are excited to be back here with us."

Nobody was at the usual meeting place. Instead, the Magic Reservists would find arrows drawn in the air with blue magical energy. (Look, Tony only had so many cool tricks. He had to make do with what he was given. Besides, it was easier than sticking signs to grass.) The arrows pointed to a space about a hundred feet away, where the ground rose up to make a small hill. The leaders of the Magic Reserve stood at the top of the hill. Refreshments were set up a few feet away from the base of the hill.

"Hey, everyone," Tony said. "Before we get started, I'd like everyone to fill out a brief survey. Let us know where you feel your strengths are and what you think are your weak spots. General stuff, like distance attacks, focused attacks, shielding, scrying, that sort of thing. Next week we'll pair you up with someone who will balance you out and practice working together."

Karla was not in a mood to be particularly helpful today. In fact, most of her thoughts were trending in the complete opposite direction. This probably stemmed from the fact that Karla was currently a male. Sure, it had happened to all the females on the island, but from her expression, she seemed to be taking it personally.

The additional testosterone probably wasn't helping any.

Thus, when it was her turn to speak, she kept it short, brief, and to the point. "Anyone feels the need to laugh or make a comment and I will cheerfully set you on fire."

She didn't look like she was kidding.

...Yes, she was still rather terrifying as a boy.

Merlin eyed her warily before nodding along with that. "So, today we'll be playing a spot of King Of The Hill. And... um... let's all try not to bring up the changes to the girls, yes?"

Rather than respond, Karla just stormed off to the edges of the crowd. It was probably a safe bet that she didn't have anything else to add.

"...Tony?" Merlin prompted, sounding a bit desperate.

"Um, yeah," Tony said. He pointed randomly in the opposite direction of Karla. "You're the King to start. Everyone else's job is to knock you off the top of the hill. Think of ways to push, pull and move, not attack and injure, okay?" They had a five minute break to clear the playing field and then Tony gave the signal to start.

There was no unusual food this time around if people worried about being attacked by pudding.

...even if pudding is delicious.

Merlin did have a few random saucers of milk spread out in case more scary little blue men arrived to steal undergarments. Or insult people in a completely un-understandable accent.

"Hello everyone! Today we'll be discussing something a bit more pertinent to the reason why this group was formed," Merlin said. "Experience in battle. Who has it and who--er--doesn't."

Very concise, right?

Karla was a little more somber today, as befitting their choice of topic, but she still had to shoot Merlin an amused look at that. "Not everyone here is a fighter. Some people's powers aren't particularly suited for combat and some people's temperaments aren't, either. Neither of those are bad things, and there will be plenty of non-fighting things to do invasion. We'll talk about those another week. But, for today, combat. How can your powers be used in a combat situation? Have you ever had to do so?"

"Even if you don't think you have any fighting powers, think if there's anything you can do that would work as a distraction long enough for someone else to attack or for you to get away," Tony said. "I mean, soap bubbles kinda suck as a weapon, but if you throw them down on a slick surface, you could make the enemy lose their footing."

Merlin nodded at that. "So please share--if you want to--any sort of experience or abilities you are willing to help others learn in case we're attacked."

A nice selection of baked goods (from J, GoB, fear not) and coffee were set out.

Tony had a cup of coffee in his left hand and a few muffin crumbs remained on his t-shirt when he stepped up to address the group. "Hey," he said. "Welcome to Magic Reserves. We're here to learn to work together using our abilities to defend the island. Even if you don't call what you do 'magic', you're welcome to practice with us." He glanced over at his fellow magic reserve leaders. "I think we're going to start with introductions, which I know we're doing like a million times this week, but you gotta start somewhere. My name's Tony. I'm from Vancouver in modern day Canada and I'm a wizard."

Karla, armed with a coffee in one hand and a pastry in the other, stepped forward and waved. "Kiss kiss," she said with a grin. "I'm Karla. I'm from the Territory of Glacia in the Realm of Kaeleer--it's okay that none of you have heard of it--and I'm a witch. That means I can use Craft for a lot of things, but I'm also a Healer and a Black Widow. I can explain what that means later, but rest assured, I will not murder you." Probably )

There were things one might consider to be cookies at the reserve today. Might, if one had an iron stomach or an entire bottle of Tums handy to deal with them after managing to choke one down.

Merlin was faaar too chipper about them, though. Because he baked something. With Karla, but they managed it somehow!

"Good morning! Today we will be talking about how to communicate with each other in case of emergency and any ways you all have to do so magically." A beat. " And I suppose the cell phones are also a bit like magic."

Nevermind that now, Merlin.

"So please, share if you have any particular way that we all might learn!"

He looked to Karla to see what she had to say on the matter.

"Among my people, we can speak on what we call psychic threads," Karla said, also beaming proudly at the lump of black and gray 'cookies' on the table. She had baked!

And it had only been a small fire, anyhow. Ish.

"The good thing about psychic threads is that you aren't limited to a single person. I could send a thought to Merlin on a a thread specifically meant for him, or to a group, or all males, or, back home, all people of a specific Jewel rank, or to anyone at all who can hear me."

"But there are other forms of communication, too. If you're in an emergency and you don't or can't worry about enemies, something as simple as a flare of magic can pinpoint people to your location. There are messages that can be triggered by a specific use of magic so that anyone else who sees the message will be confronted by a blank sheet until the spell is cast."

"What are some other ways you can communicate magically? I'm wary to trust my cellphone. It stopped working in Kaeleer without warning, so it could happen anytime."

It didn't help that Kaeleer has neither satellites or cellphone towers, but that was far beyond Karla's understanding.

"After we've discussed our options, we're going to play a small game. There are a pile of handwavy messages on that table over there," she said, pointing to the pile of foled note cards next to the totally delicious looking cookies she and Merlin had brought. There were also blank notecards and pencils nearby. "Grab a partner and a message and try to communicate magically."

She grinned at them again. "And don't forget to eat the cookies!" she chirped.

Do it. Don't let the kitchen's sacrifice be in vain.

Karla arrived to the meeting a little harried and late. She'd been running around trying to catch up on everything that she'd missed (had it really only been a week here?) and had nearly forgotten about the Reserves meeting. Fortunately, she'd overheard Francine telling Bond that Merlin was somewhere else, which reminded her about the meeting. However, that also meant that if there actually was going to be a meeting today--and there most certainly was, dammit--it was up to her to make sure it happened.

Completely off the cuff. Swell.

"Hi, everyone," she said, panting a bit from her mad dash to the Reserves. "Thanks for coming. Sorry about missing last week." She gave a vague wave. "Home stuff. You know how it is."

Well, no they probably didn't. Not her home stuff anyway. But that wasn't important here.

"First of all, I wanted to thank everyone who helped with the Support Reserves two weeks ago. You all did an amazing job and we all very much appreciated it. Extra thanks to whoever carried me to the Town Hall after I fell asleep in the library..." Karla trailed off, coming to the end of the (very little) she'd been able to prepare while running around.

A moment or two of thought--where she tried to look solemn and thankful, not like she was frantically trying to think of things to say--Karla decided to keep running with that theme. "I think that showed us just how important it is for all of our Reserves to work together in times of crisis. We may have different abilities than either the fighters or the...support..ers?" that didn't sound right "but that doesn't mean that there can't be an overlap. Or that we can't all be useful to one another."

"The first thing I'd like to suggest is that each of us drop by another Reserves meeting sometime. I'm not saying you should pick up a sword and start fighting or anything, but taking a few hours to see what the other groups are doing and getting to know them and their leaders won't hurt. It's always good to know and trust your comrades-in-arms." Man, that was a great idea! Not that it helped today. Damn.

"Uh, for today, however, I was thinking we could come up with some scenarios about how we can foresee ourselves helping the other two Reserves out sometime in the future. I don't just mean picking up a weapon or a book, but what are some ways that we can use our gifts to help them? Are there ways that we might get in their way, and, if so, what can we do to minimize those occurrences? What are things they need to know to best help us out?"

She gave them all her best unsure-but-game grin. "Let's start talking, shall we?"

Karla stood in front of the Reserves, grinning widely at them. She was doing her best to keep her smile friendly and welcoming, but every so often, her gaze would stray over to the large, covered mound at her feet, and her grin would shade oh-so-slightly towards 'wicked.' "Kiss kiss," she greeted everyone as they noshed on treats and coffee courtesy of J,GOB and the Perk. "Thanks for coming to the Magic Reserves today. If it's your first time here, welcome, and if you've been here before, welcome back."

"So, while our group has the potential to do so much more, the main reason we were organized was to lend magical support during an invasion. Every so often, then, we feel as if we should focus on using powers in combat situations, in order to give you the feel of such things without any of the danger. This way, if--okay, with this island, when we're called upon to defend ourselves and the other people on Fandom, you already have a bit of practice under your belt. So, as I'm sure you've already guessed--today is one of those days." With a flourish worthy of a stage magician, Karla pulled the cloth off of the mound, revealing a pile of paintball guns. Next to them were several stacks of clean, well-worn clothing.

"Today we're going to deal with incoming projectiles," Karla announced. "Feel free to stop the paint any way you like. Burn it, freeze it, use TK to push it aside, shield against it, make the other person feel bad for shooting at you, whatever. Or simply dodge out of the way, hide behind someone else, however you feel most comfortable, with powers or without. The important part is not getting hit. It is paintball, however, so don't worry about hurting anyone. So come on up, grab a paintball gun and something to go over your clothes, and let's begin!"

With tea and biscuits--oh hush, he was a proper Irish English boy--ready for members and guests, Merlin was cheerfully waiting for everyone to arrive.

"Hello! Today, Karla and I have a bit of a new exercise for us all to try today," He informed everyone with a sort of manic cheer that came from hoping to god this ended well.

Karla stepped forward with the blithe carelessness that came from having no clue that anything could possibly go wrong with her plan. "Kiss kiss everyone. So, more than anything else, there needs to be trust between us as a group. Without it, we'll be disorganized, inefficient, and the other members of the Reserves won't trust us, either. Which, in a crisis, could lead to disaster. So, I thought today we could focus on building that trust together. And for that we have--" she paused for a moment to let the anticipation build "--magical trustfalls!" She beamed at them, certain they'd be as enthusiatic as she was about the idea.

"Yay!" Merlin offered with a strangled little cheer. "Karla and I will demonstrate."

Or something.

"Karla?"

"That's right!" Karla said, giving Merlin a reassuring smile. One that had a lot of teeth in it. She practically skipped around behind him. "In case you're not sure what a trustfall is, Merlin is going to close his eyes and fall backwards, expecting me to catch him before he hits the ground. I'm going to do so, but only with magic." She clasped her arms behind her back. "Ready Merlin?" she chirped. "You trust me, right?"

It wasn't reassuring at all! But he nodded dutifully and closed his eyes. "Of course."

Really.

Taking a breath, he fell backwards.

Karla took the easiest path. Using Craft, she solidified the air behind him, the same way she would if she were airwalking. Merlin hadn't tipped back more than a few inches before the air caught him. "Now, there are a ton of different things I could have done. I could have called in a big pile of soft things for him to land on, or put a shield behind him, or just floated something over to catch him."

Merlin blinked a few times and looked around at the nothing holding him up. "Whatever it is you believe might work best. And if you don't think you can use magic, your hands are perfectly fine."

"Or if you think your magic isn't suitable, you can always brainstorm with a partner about ways you could possibly make it suitable," Karla added. "I've found that a lot of working with magic involves improvising." She looked over and gave Merlin her best unsure-but-game grin. "My turn now?"

Merlin nodded and waved toward the rest of the group. "Pair off and get started then!"

Karla grinned at everyone as they arrived, doing her best to look excited about them being there and not at all nervous. She was used to appearing in public and whatnot, wasn't she? Of course she was--ignoring the fact that the last time she'd done so, she'd been nine. Details. And it wasn't like she had anything to prove to anyone. Really.

"Kiss kiss," she said when enough people had assembled. "I'm Karla and thanks for coming to the Magic Reserves today. Whether you're here because you have powers or just because you're curious, we're glad you showed up today. This is Merlin," she continued, gesturing at her co-leader, who gave a smile and wave, "and we're the leaders of the Reserves."

"Like the Fighting Reserve which met yesterday and the Support Reserves which meets on Friday, we're here because sometimes things happen on the island. And not everyone is equipped to deal with those things. We're here to train so that we are capable of handling emergencies as well as helping out those who are not as capable. I won't lie, the most common scenario is some kind of invasion that we will help repulse, but that isn't the only reason we train. After all, this is Fandom," she said wryly, "and it lives to surprise us. The difference between us and the other two Reserves is that we are equipped with special gifts or abilities that we can use in such emergencies."

"We're not just here to organize ourselves in case of emergencies, we're also here to train so that we all have a better handle on our powers. The more comfortable you are with your powers, the better you'll be able to help out in an emergency. Also, I want to stress that having powers is nothing to hide or be ashamed of. I know that we all come from different places, and at home, such a thing might not be true. But here at Fandom, you can display your powers openly and freely without fear of reprisal." She drew her legs up so that she was perched on air. "You don't have to be afraid here. You don't have to hide who you are."

"But for today, we're just going to continue the first week trend of introductions. Name, grade, your powers if you feel comfortable sharing that, and why you decided to stop by today. Also, help yourself to refreshments. Also also, saying 'I came for refreshments' is a perfectly valid answer." She snuck a glance at Merlin to see if he had anything else to add. He seemed okay so Karla concluded with a grin. "Thanks for coming. Have at."

Merlin may not have been as bouncy as the last person to lead a reserve this week, but he was at least energetic. In a far more British way.

There were varieties of tea. New doors opened to him there.

"Hello everyone. Today we'll be working on finding at least a partner to work so any sort of weaknesses you have may be covered by them and also the other way around. I know we don't all know each other and out abilities yet, so this will just be a bit of a practice round. If you find someone you work well with, good. If not, you can always keep trying."

He smiled brightly, nodding at them all. "Just pick a partner now and discuss our try to show what you can do. Er--within reason of course. I don't think we'd be allowed back here if someone burned down the preserve."

There was a distinct lack of cauldrons to give this sort of gathering a magic-y sort of credibility. There was, however, some biscuits picked up from JGoB.

And some tea. Because it calmed his nerves on being back in the damned woods gathering people like himself all together in one place. There was always the possibility that one of them would try to kill Arthur. Simple facts of life, that.

He rather hoped that wouldn't be the case at all.
